Meet Adam Barkett of Interior Plant Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Barkett.

Hi Adam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sure, and thank you for having me. My name is Adam Barkett and I practice interiorscaping in South Florida. My father started his interiorscaping business back in 1975 in Miami and named it Interior Plant Creations. I was born in 1984 and grew up in Broward watching and helping my dad take care of plants; I’d help him unload them when he came home from the nurseries and would help water them in our shade house we used to have at our home. Sometimes he’d even have my brother and I come with him to work either to the nurseries in Homestead or to help install or water them at his accounts, so I’ve always been around plants and known how to take care of them. After graduating from UCF with a degree in psychology, I found myself working with a foliage company in central Florida for about 8 months but ultimately moved back home and took prerequisite courses for Nursing (my mother was a nurse) and enrolled in USF’s accelerated nursing program and became a BSN RN. I excelled in my nursing career; I practiced bedside nursing on a Progressive Care Unit for about 3 years and then transitioned to the IT department as documentation was changing from paper charting to computer-based. However, one day I looked up and found myself in a room with no windows, staring at screens all day, and knew I had to get out of there. That was in 2018; my father was turning 70 that year and was set to retire so I decided to take a chance and I left my healthcare career to take over the business and haven’t looked back.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Going from being employed with a steady paycheck and salary to running your own business and being your own boss/self-employed and setting your own hours was definitely an adjustment. Learning how to run a business effectively from complying with the various state and county agencies and following tax codes definitely required a different mindset that I was used to.

As you know, we’re big fans of Interior Plant Creations. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
IPC has been servicing all of South Florida since 1975, so it is well-established. I install and maintain live indoor plants for commercial and residential properties – so think office plants and house plants in all kinds of sizes and varieties. I take pride in my work, and I enjoy it, which I feel is important. I became a nurse to help people but couldn’t really do that the way I had initially envisioned but now I’m able to connect people with plants which have countless health benefits, and the look on someone’s face when I bring them a plant is priceless. Allow me to show you 🙂 If you are interested in adding plants to your locale, I’d love to bring you one to discuss how we can make that happen.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Books: How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie

The E Myth by Michael E Gerber

Think And Grow Rich and Outwitting The Devil by Napoleon Hill

Awareness by Anthony De Mello

Practicing daily affirmations are great too I think, and I like to listen to Earl Nightingale, Joe Dispenza, and Bruce Lipton speeches on YouTube to name a few.
