Rising Stars: Meet Tamara Archer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Archer.

Hi Tamara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After starting a career specializing in creative project management for A-list advertising agencies, my affinity for the built environment led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and later, a master’s degree in Design Management. My family and I relocated from Brooklyn, NY to Miami, FL. Inspired by Miami’s modern tropical cityscape, I started my business designing condo spaces for residents in the downtown building where we lived. Since then, I’ve expanded my services to include hospitality and commercial design. I’ve provided interior architectural design and furniture designs for beachfront resorts in the Caribbean. I’ve also worked with Royal Caribbean Group providing interior architectural design and design management for world-class cruise ships.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges I faced was the lack of mentorship from more seasoned designers when I was starting out. I overcame that by being diligent about learning everything I possibly could on my own, from running a business to working with contractors and vendors. There was a lot of trial and error but with each project, I adapted and improved my process, becoming a better designer and business owner. Along the way, I’ve learned to trust myself and not compare myself to anyone else because my journey is different.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My niche is contemporary eclectic style rooted in holistic design. I incorporate natural elements, maximize space, and use mood-enhancing qualities of color and lighting. My design aesthetic is inspired by different cultures, world travel, architecture, and nature. Exotic flair with an urban edge is my approach to creating beautiful timeless interiors. I enjoy helping my clients improve the energy in their homes and businesses to find balance with designs that inspire, relax, and rejuvenate.

What sets me apart as an interior designer is that my portfolio is diverse and multi-faceted. I’ve work on residential, commercial, resort, and cruise ship design projects. I design spaces that are uniquely tailored to my clients based on their personality, style, and needs.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Most interior designers start out specializing in residential design just as I did. However, my love for travel would lead me to pursue a career in hospitality design. I had no experience in that area when I was presented with the opportunity to design luxury beachfront resorts in Jamaica, which required me to relocate to the island. Leaving my home and being away from my family and friends was a huge risk, but it did pay off. I learned so much about tropical climates and its impact on built environments, which expanded my knowledge of furniture, fixtures, and finishes. That experience opened more doors for me, and I eventually landed a position with Royal Caribbean Group managing architectural design for the world’s largest cruise ships.
