Today we’d like to introduce you to Vonley Smith.
Hi Vonley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
My name is Vonley Smith. I am a Caribbean filmmaker and storyteller born on the island of Barbados, my film work integrates the unspoken tension and lived realities of Caribbean people. From the age of 14, I began producing animated music videos. His work in the AMV circuit was recognized globally via YouTube.
After pursuing my bachelor in Fine Arts majoring in Film and completing my film thesis I dropped out of school to pursue my film career at the time I was presented with opportunities to travel so I took them. I also started creating digital art and exploring my creativity in different mediums such as script writing, photography, and music. I love creating. Makes me feel like I’m understanding both my inner and outer existence through expressing myself and communicating through the arts.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being from a small island there is no shortage of amazing stories to tell but I did face challenges along the way. For me was listening to my inner voice. Believing in myself when others or family may think otherwise. I won’t describe it as a smooth road but I believe experience these challenges will make it all worthwhile when i do achieve and see the results of my hard work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run an online film/photography and video editing studios called VWS Studios. The studios have been built from the ground up and as I work on my filmmaking career i look forward to building it out to its full potential. It’s a work in progress but I’m slowly building it to where I want it to be.
Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I don’t have a mentor within my field of filmmaking as yet but I’m inspired by fellow creatives and artist who I have worked with from all over the world who practice different art forms. Honestly people who choose to stay true to themselves and find ways of staying on the journey of creatively expressing themselves are the ones who inspire me.
