Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Quintana.
Hi Sam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I always loved photography and food. In college, I started looking up the best restaurants to try and made a list of places I wanted to go. I’d take pictures of the food to keep track of where I’d been and what I tried. Eventually, I started sharing and documenting my restaurant visits on Instagram and it went from there.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One main struggle includes trying to keep up with trends while remaining authentic. Instagram loves certain food trends but these trends end up just being for the photo or video and not about the actual food. I wouldn’t want to recommend a spot or a food I don’t believe people would enjoy, but the pressure to stay relevant can be overwhelming at times. Instagram’s ever-changing algorithm doesn’t help either. It’s getting harder and harder for photographers since everything seems to be about videos and Reels nowadays.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Miami-based food blogger. I specialize in all things food, drink, and dessert. I’m known for my food content as well as my restaurant recommendations and recipes. I’m most proud of my photos. I try to set up all my shots and edit in a way that really makes the food pop. I love vibrant colors and want my photos to showcase that. I’d like to believe my authenticity sets me apart. Like I said before, even if a place is trendy, I won’t share that spot with my audience unless I can confidently recommend it.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risks are necessary in life. Nothing would get done if no one took risk. A major risk I recently took was leaving one job for another. I didn’t know much about the new company but I felt like it was time for me to move forward, despite the criticism I got about leaving. My previous job was “safe” but low risk is often correlated with low reward. I’m not the type of person to settle for a low-reward outcome, but I do believe in playing your cards right. Timing is key.
