Meet Roscoe Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roscoe Robinson.

Hi Roscoe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello, my name is Roscoe Robinson. I grew up in a small town called Huntsville, Missouri. Where everyone you graduated with you knew them since you were in kindergarten. I always had a passion for sports growing up where I was an All-state athlete in both basketball and track, where I was a two-time state champion in long jump. After high school, I decided to continue you my athletic journey and went to the University of Texas at San Antonio where I was an All-American Athlete in Track. The year between my Junior and Senior I had an opportunity to participate in AmeriCorps came in the inner city working with At-risk youth. That summer while working at the summer camp I sensed that the young men needed more. So, I started a young men’s mentoring program called Young Kings with bout 40 young boys from the ages of 11-18. Our main areas of focus were faith, character building, leadership, and community service. That summer I was able to get sponsors from local businesses to start a summer program for the boys. That summer we did community service projects, grew in our faith, cooking classes, learned media skills, and how to code on the computer. After that summer all the boys graduated with a certificate. After that summer I knew I had a passion to see the lives of at-risk youth change. After graduating from college my desires were to be a professional track athlete, but God had different plans. When I was going to become a professional, I tore my hamstring. The hamstring was not healing correctly so I had to find a different path to take. I moved to Memphis TN where my sister who was in the military stationed at the time. No job and no money I started to apply to different jobs in the city. Eventually, a school called me back and hired me as a first-grade teacher. From teenagers to first graders was a big transition but I loved every minute of it. Watching students come to my class and becoming fluent in reading brought so much joy to me. As the next 4 years went by my goal was to become a principal once again God has different plans for me. After my last year teaching, I felt like there more for me to do in the community. A friend I had known on social media reached out to me and said there was this great position for me. So, I interviewed and was hired by Agape Child and Family services in which is a nonprofit that serves over 10,000 families in the city of Memphis. I serve as a Stars Connector Supervisor in which I lead a team through their school-based ministry that work one-one with children to provide diverse support and services to keep kids in school and ready to learn. So, since being at this position I have seen the lives of several children who are at risk changed throughout programs to make sure they are ready to learn by providing academic, behavior, and emotional support.

Since doing that has opened up the door for me to be a public speaker speaking primary a youth initiative throughout the United States and Internationally. My whole goal in life is if I can reach one person and they change their life for the better I did my part. In the process of working in the community, I became an Author. Last year 2021 I publish my first book ” Get Your “Get Your Fight Back: Strategies to Win the Battles of Life.” The book is aimed for those who have felt hopeless amidst the struggle of life and thought the fight is lost to the adversary. The essence of the book is to restore hope to the weary. With this book, I have spoken at churches, schools, and youth empowerment organizations to help those who have lost hope.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Great question! One obstacle that I had to encourage myself was my senior of college. I had lost my Pell grant that was $10,000 and I needed in 2 weeks! Talking about pressure! So, I decided to believe that this would all work out. 1 week later a family from back home who were bankers find out about my situation and paid for my whole year of living expenses. A miracle! Also, I said previously I believe when I tore my hamstring right before I was a professional athlete. I was in a bad place mentally and thought all hope was gone. But I had to decide to be resilient to overcome and believe that this would make me stronger in the end. Also, being an entrepreneur takes a lot of faith and long nights. Sometimes things works and sometimes they don’t, so I always have to remind myself of my goals and vision that I have.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work in my professional career at Agape Child and Family services in which is a nonprofit that serves over 10,000 families in the city of Memphis.

I also am a success life coach which I help emerging leaders who want to develop self-discipline so that they can increase their productivity which leads them to become a more successful leader. I do this through a 6 -week program called the Motived Leader. I am proud of the transformation of leaders once they get through my program who are more confident and begin to make greater impact.

I am also a public speaker in which I focus on leadership, youth development, overcoming adversities, and self-worth. I conduct mastermind workshops to help people overcome negative thought patterns.

What’s next?
My future plans are to one day build a school for at-risk young men in the inner city. Short-term plans are to coach at least 100 emerging leaders within the next year so they can make more impact and add value to their communities and nations. Also, to start workshops for black men who are youth to break the stigma of mental health.
