Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lagos Gomez.
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
While most people were negatively affected by Covid I was blessed enough to find myself in a position where I was able to start my own business! In December 2019 I decided to take a risk and I quit my job working at another training company where I was employed for a little over three years.
I was constantly put to the test and I quickly realized that this was something I was capable of doing on my own. I had a large number of people reaching out to me asking me to train their dogs during these times when everybody was able to be at home and put in the work to get their dogs fully trained. My mom was the one that ultimately gave me that last little push I needed and helped me create what is now Oh My Dog! South Florida.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, I feel like this has been a smooth road even moving from Miami-Dade to Broward County. My work speaks for itself so I was able to quickly gain clients up North based on verbal recommendations. I guess the biggest challenge has just been being a female.
This is a male dominant field and most people might feel a little discouraged when they have a large or aggressive dog. Luckily I’m tall for a girl and can easily reassure them that I can handle any breed, any size at any age!
As you know, we’re big fans of Oh My Dog! SFL. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Oh, My Dog South Florida has developed long-lasting relationships with its clients built on trust and partnership. I have extensive experience with dogs of all breeds and all ages. There has never been a puppy too young or a dog too old for me to work with. I go into clients’ homes creating successful training programs for all breeds with any family type.
Since the inception of my company, the focus has always been to strengthen the bond between dog and owner using positive techniques and reinforcement. I believe in setting realistic goals with timelines and will never over-promise unattainable outcomes. I strive to provide open honest partnerships with my clients which have enabled me to better accommodate their needs to live a cohesive life with their pup.
I am well known for working with rescues as that is it is my favorite! Most people don’t know what happens to their pup before getting rescued but with my experience and history, I feel that with a class or two I can understand their pup. It’s hard to explain the feeling but everyone says I use to be a dog in my past life and that’s why I understand them so well.
My understanding and honesty are definitely what sets me apart from others. I can happily say I don’t do this for the money and it’s a genuine joy when I get to work with new pups. I’m most proud of the connection I build between my clients and their dogs. It’s such a great feeling especially when people feel like they have lost hope.
We offer basic obedience training, behavior modification, and service dog training as well. All done in the comfort of your home so the problems you’re having there can be fixed. My training is very one-on-one so I teach you all of my tips and tricks so that when I am not there the owners know exactly what to do!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and are any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
When people are confined to their homes they seek comfort from their pets and it brings me joy to know that I can help strengthen that relationship.
