Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Dalton.
Hi Natalia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our story begins in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico where my brother, Jess, and I, grew up. Throughout our childhood, we enjoyed our mother Gabriela’s carefully crafted dishes that highlighted her signature homemade sauces. As the years progressed, our family went through many changes. The biggest change being moving to the United States. As hard as the transition was, one thing remained authentically Mexican: our mother’s cooking. We decided that her gourmet sauces were just too delicious to keep to ourselves and so Saucy Lips was born!
Our family has dedicated the past few years to sharing our sauces with the world. We started selling her saucy creations at local farmer’s markets. To this day, you can find one of our family members at local Miami farmer’s markets (Vizcaya, UM, Jackson Hospital, and Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale). Our ultimate goal is to bring families back to the table with amazing food. From the very beginning to today, we can proudly say that we have expanded into retailers NATIONWIDE!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an extremely difficult yet an extremely rewarding path to get to where we are today. What started in my mother’s kitchen and our family table in Mexico, to local farmer’s markets once we moved to the United States, has grown to manufacturing at major USA factories and selling to thousands of retailers nationwide.
Other than the difficult process that is scaling a traditional recipe for mass production while keeping the authentic flavor of my mom’s cooking, the biggest obstacle we have had to overcome is the amount of financing needed for a small family-owned brand to expand in retail. Bootstrapping a family-owned business in massive retail is difficult, if you add being a minority as well, you double that difficulty.
Thankfully, the cultural climate in the United States is changing and we have an incredible team who believes in our brand and we all work tirelessly to take our brand and culture to the next level.
As you know, we’re big fans of Saucy Lips Foods. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a Mexican family business that specializes in creating healthy cooking products.
What sets us apart? As a Mexican family, we feel a lack of representation when shopping in Ethnic/Hispanic aisles. We see many products labeled as Mexican; however, the flavors are far from what the authentic taste should be, the ingredient decks are filled with chemicals and also the brands behind these products are not actually Mexican Owned. With our innovation of bringing easy-to-use, clean label, and authentic Mexican sauces to the market, we hope that more Hispanic families like ours will take a break from creating the sauces from scratch. With our new simmering sauces, we are on a mission to provide everyone (Hispanic and non-Hispanic households) the opportunity to enjoy an effortless authentic Mexican meal.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Our family coming together to work as a team.
