Today we’d like to introduce you to Hurrem Akyol Kahraman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Turkey. My dad lives in Germany and the rest of my family is still in Turkey. My sister and I kinda grew up living with my grandparents. I miss them every day. I migrated to U.S. in 2013. I studied ESL in Miami Dade College and I used to work in a retailer store on Lincoln road mall. My husband had a restaurant business back then but I was never into it. After a friend’s recommendation in 2014, I found a cosmetology school. I completed the cosmetology school in a year and 1,200 hours. I passed my state board exam test and got my Florida cosmetology license. I worked in 2 hair salons as a hairstylist from 2014 to 2020. In 2020, I started renting a chair in a most beautiful salon in Miami called White Space Salon and met Julie (my business associate ) then. Julie had the most beautiful boutique salon in the beach… But after Covid happened… the salons and so many businesses were closed for 2 months. After that the salon reopened and I started working at the salon. And 1,5 years later, I officially joined Julie’s already successful business and became business associate. We moved the salon to a bigger space and busier area in Miami Beach.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I grew up in a conservative family and they never liked the idea that I was moving to another country but they always knew how much I liked the U.S. Now they are so proud of me and supporting me no matter what I do.

There is always a risk in any business. Especially as a business owner when you’re from another country . Because it’s a different country and you don’t know the system so well. Fortunately, I had a lot of help, I still do sometimes and it’s ok. I’m not so hard on myself; I’ve come so far and am proud of myself.
