Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Matheus.
Hi Cindy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In the Summer of 2020, I was just about finished with my undergraduate career at Florida International University. Miami was on a strict lockdown and Covid-19 cases were rising more and more each day. At the time, I felt uncertain, anxious, and lost seeing the world go through unprecedented and unexpected change.
Towards the middle of July, my mother came home with one of her eccentric ideas about a business, only this time I listened. She suggested we cater to our interests in spirituality, astrology, and wellness through the medium of body and home care — handcrafted cold-processed bar soaps, hand-poured non-toxic candles, body oils, crystal gems, incense and herbs. We began learning, studying, and working towards that idea that soon became our reality in a two-bedroom apartment. In November of 2020, we shared the news with our loved ones, friends, and community. Through our online and farmer’s market expansion, we quickly recognized the rewarding factor of creating products that benefit the skin and bring comfort into the home, all through the conversation of spirituality and wellness.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We so wish it was a smooth road! Along the way, we’ve had to adjust our products due to client interests and demands, find which direction we want to take when we feel a creative rut, and occasionally accept and not at all get mad when a soap batch is ruined due to a negative reaction between the sodium hydroxide (lye) and oils.
Owning a business has showed me how I approach and manage stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. It’s not easy executing a vision because then one still thinks they could have done it better. But, that’s all part of the process.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a creative writer, storyteller, and public relations specialist. I’ve worked in and out of the arts, humanities, and the wellness community for five years and because of these past experiences, I’ve been able to build the business I have today.
How do you think about luck?
I believe we create our own luck through words and actions. Even when, at times, an unexpected lucky or unlucky thing happens, there was a conversation, an action, an idea that pushed forth a domino that brought in luck.
Luck can be looked at through the lenses of missed opportunities, changes, delays, and even blockages. It’s all about the hand Life has dealt and what you do with it.
