Meet Hugo Rodriguez Loredo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Rodriguez Loredo.

Hi Hugo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I define myself as a Modern Artist — someone who expresses life and dwells in the fine arts. My passion and zest in the arts has lead me to many interesting places and wonderful world experiences as I continue to evolve with my creative self.

“Art has no age, no language, no gender, no religion with no geography transcending time becoming the center of the Universe.” — Hugo

My life is pretty much scattered gracefully like a Jackson Pollack painting. To-and-from, my poetic and colorful heritage originates in cute little town of Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico. Primarily raised and spent the majority of my childhood and teenage years in small town of Del Rio, Texas. I also lived in Dallas, Texas through out the 1990’s as I attended the Art Institute of Dallas.  After which, I relocated to Buffalo, New York and enjoyed the Northern life for almost 20 years. As the cookie crumbled…I slapped myself! Thinking out loud, I need to move to Florida. Since 2015, Miami has been my home. I knew it was official when I changed my phone number to a 305 area code!

Specific to the arts, I started painting my first big mural just after graduating High School. After attending art school in Dallas, I got involved with Graphic Design/Digital Publishing as a way to expand and supplement my income and creativity.

In 1998, I was presented with an opportunity to relocate to Buffalo, NY. and this is where my artistic career excelled. After several art exhibitions, my work was recognized from a prestigious event, as I became the official artist/image of The Joann Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition, 2008. This was an organic relationship as my work stems from classical guitar….highlighting the importance of art and music.

Another pinnacle point of my artistic career was with the 10 year anniversary of September 11, 2001. Two of my works were selected for a group exhibition memorializing the tragedy of the twin towers at New York University, Commons Gallery.

Beyond the canvas, I love giving back to community as art is something to be shared. While my time in Buffalo, NY I was awarded a teaching grant. The objective of this award was to highlight the importance of art in schools, showcasing my work as a living artist to students and teaching them that they can have a career of their dreams in the arts.

In 2013, I was fortunate to participate with an art lesson plan for Diakonos International, a non-profit organization in Miami, FL structured to support the orphanage in Carrefour, Haiti – Art Day Celebration. This remains a blessing in heart, as I have participated for two consecutive events.

This concludes my mission to make my mark in Miami….not so easy. Miami is immense with its competitive art scene, worldly tourism, modern architecture, 1st class hospitality and celebrity lifestyle. My goal is to anchor my success here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles and challenges are like the key ingredients of a great recipe that give the dish its memorable taste and impeccable presentation. There are no obstacles when it comes to creativity.

In general, when people are attending art exhibits they don’t take the time to read and learn about the artist. The trajectory and accomplishments of the artist are very important and commonly overlooked.

Atop of that, there are many caveats in the Art business. Always put things in writing and be careful who you disclose your ideas to. When the artist are in the spotlight drama is always nearby. Politics and conflicts of interest with greedy 2nd/3rd party individuals/establishments. Rejection has been a huge part of my artistic career. However, my work never suffers from these externalities as I maintain a professional and positive attitude.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The philosophy in which I approach and present my work separates me from the rest. Photographs don’t give my work the justice it deserves. Art is an experience.

The first phase of my work (a span of 25 years) was inspired by classical guitar. These fluid guitar-like expressions are very joyful, poetic and are rich in color and rhythm. A common theme that I depict in this series are heart-warming contemporary versions of the Madonna & Child.

I began exploring the second phase of my work around 2013. With this innovative style, I employ a philosophical approach by overlapping 2 layers of canvas representing two different hemispheres of expression. This current body of work is more complex and precise, where I blend minimalist tones of skyscapes with a presentation of architectural lines that compliment an intelligent living space.

I don’t cut corners as I take my work very seriously. People may not fully understand it and that’s ok. If it’s your first time buying original artwork, invest in local artist. Always reserve between 1% to 5% of your annual salary to own artwork from a living artist.

I feel very blessed and privileged to express this artistic life. My work has been measured for its authenticity, merit and talent. It has opened many doors, multi-culturally and geographically. The people I have met and that admire my work have impacted in the most profound way.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I employ a tremendous amount of time, detail, and research of materials to feel and connect with what inspires me to create something very unique and special.

A quirky thing about me, when it comes to dancing, I have a hard time keeping tempo. Trust me, my mother knows I can’t dance like most Latino’s.
