Exploring Life & Business with Juan Penalver of Asger K9

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Penalver.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My life in the dog training world began ten years ago when I adopted my Pitbull, Angie. An old friend of mine could no longer keep her because she was an aggressive dog at the time, not suitable for his family. Ironically, I was the only person who connected with her and she was drawn to me. When he was relocating her, she broke out of her leash and ran to me like a sign that it was me she chose. I reached out to a good friend who is a professional dog trainer and asked him to teach me the ropes to train my dog because at this point I had gotten kicked out of my house with her. I was able to reverse Angie’s aggression and build a stronger healthy bond with her. Fast forward to a few years later, I moved up North near Jacksonville when my life was at an all-time low and I was trying to start all over again. I worked at a dog hotel facility and would assist my friend on the side to train dogs. I eventually moved back down to Miami because my brother-in-law suddenly passed away and he was the main source of income and support for my family. I bounced from job to job to make ends meet but none that I could stick to. That’s when my friend and I came up with the idea to open up Asger K9. It became something that we enjoyed doing together as friends and business partners.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No success comes easy. For the last three years with Asger K9, I’ve had long days and nights. I remember at the start of the business, I would sit in my car with my dog wondering how I was going to buy my next meal to eat. I didn’t have any money to my name, but it didn’t stop me from pursuing Asger K9. I would offer free training sessions to just kickstart the business and put our name out there to collect referrals. Then, COVID happened, just when I thought I was having a breakthrough. Everything shut down and no one wanted to be near other people, so there went the purpose of my dog training business. As things slowly started opening back up, I started from square one again. Here we are in 2022, where we’ve grown to have 5+ employees, a full house of dogs 24/7, over 1,000 happy clients that we’ve trained, and a life I am happy to wake up to every day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a dog training company where we specialize in psychology and behavior modification. We offer different packages of training, from one-on-one to board and train, boarding and daycare. We pride ourselves in behavior obedience in different environments so you can take your best friend everywhere you go. We also offer personal protection training for those who qualify.
