Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Kagan.
Helen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in a Communist State of what then was the USSR, where oppression and control were a daily reality had formed my beliefs, values, and a great respect for freedom to express yourself. In 1991 I immigrated to the USA, whereto I brought my Jewish heritage, 3 graduate degrees, 0 English, and an unending thirst to explore the World and its meaning. Coming from a family of Scientists, I was always fascinated by the left/right brain relationship, which led me to study many things – from mathematics and science to psychology, therapy and healing to fine art, and finally create my unique venue “Healing Arts”. As a refugee from Russia, my art reflects an existential view on life, desire to bridge realities and heal the Past. Communicating on subliminal levels my art delivers this message through positively charged intention, healing frequencies of color, energetically balanced composition, and brings you in touch with your own Journey.
I believe in healing power of art, and thus – my unique venue ©“Healing Arts” is a vehicle for emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-being. I think my art is better experienced “in-person” due to live vibrations of bright colors, heavy textures, usually large size, and just an overall charisma and liveliness; yet many people who have my “healing cards”, prints, giclees (reproductions) – report feeling better as well (see “testimonials” on my website). If you are a seeker on a Quest, are looking for some quintessential insight, a person who wants to embrace a healing power of art, or are just wishing to feel better – you might find rewarding to have my healing art in your environment 🙂
Mainly self-taught I’ve been painting for as long as I remember, since 2005 do it professionally. I work with oils and acrylics, lately experimenting with mixed media. My canvases are influenced by impressionism, and expressionism. They are bold, passionate, colorful, vibrant, many – channeled, all – intuitive. I donated quite a few of my art to charities, Hospice, individuals in crisis, and organizations where I felt it was most needed.
In the last few years my ©”Healing Arts” participated in over 50 Juried shows, local, national and international exhibitions including SPECTRUM Art Basel Miami 2017-16-15-14-13; Art San Diego 2015-14; Art Hamptons NY 2015-14; Art EXPO NY 2017-16-15-14-13; Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series 2015-14; ART HOP, VT 2017-16-15-14-13; CONTINUUM, Art Synergy & Art Palm Beach 2017-16-15-14-13; RAW “Finalists and Director’s favorites (2013); City Hall of Hollywood FL “Art in Public Places” 3-months display (2009), and many others. My “Healing Arts” won awards, was exhibited in NY, NJ, VT, WI, MI, MN,CA, and all over FL. I’m featured in multiple online galleries including Saatchi, Fine Art America, and many others, am on display in galleries in FL, MI, NY, VT. I was named a “Collectible Artist 2016” by Brickell and Key Biscayne Magazines (“Dealer’s Dozen”, Dec. Issue 2016).
I believe for many of us, creatives, Art – is a spiritual path, a transformational process, a way of being. I believe art is a catalyst for healing individuals, society and the environment. I believe in the inter-connectedness of mind, body and spirit. I believe that now, more than ever, the World needs the positive energy and spiritually-based intentions, beliefs and values.
My ©“Healing Arts” is my unique way to synergistically bring together fine art, expressive arts, and the art of healing to enhance well-being in a viewer. It is a statement of all my beliefs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The greatest challenges I’ve been facing in making my art a sustainable business venue, is that it is VERY difficult to find/create your buyer. Not just to have random sales here and there, but – to develop on-going relationships with your Collectors – both, with individuals and in corporate world. I am trying to bring my main focus into engaging Healthcare facilities and Corporations to utilize my ©“Healing Arts” for their environment, but it is still the biggest challenge…
I believe that Artistry (Creativity) and Business (Logic) can go together hand-by-hand. I happened to be a person with a very developed “left brain” (PhD in Science) and equally developed “right brain” (Psychology, Energy Healing, Fine Art, Healing Arts). Therefore, I think I can see the advantage of utilizing art for Healing pretty well! 🙂
But… I also understand the importance in finding your niche, creating your unique brand, and locating and sustaining your buyer. I’ve done it all!, but… it seems that just this – is not enough. I feel that it is very important for a “Visionary Artist” like myself, to have a strong and unique message we are communicating to others through our art. A message that can touch people’s souls, warm their hearts, and uplift their spirit. A message so important, that people would want to have your art in front of their eyes all the time, and they would want to keep coming back to it because it is unique and special, and speaks to their hearts and souls. This is how I understand the Purpose and Mission of “Art for Healing”.
And this is what I do – I continue creating my ©”Healing Arts” … in spite of all possible obstacles and challenges! 🙂
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about © Helen Kagan’ Healing Arts – what should we know?
I’ve created my brand ©”Healing Arts” over 20 years ago when I first have been practicing healing work as a holistic practitioner. Being a Scientist, Psychologist, Counselor helped me to conceptualize and further develop my concept “Healing Arts”, while being a Healer and Artist – added a gift to express it in a beautiful form that warms your Heart, touches your Soul, and uplifts your Spirit.
I believe art heals. I believe in the inter-connectedness of mind, body and spirit. A holistic therapist and artist I developed my unique technique and style “Healing Arts” integrating Fine Art, Expressive Arts, and the Art of Healing. I believe that art as a powerful form of self-expression is a vehicle for emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
For over 10 years my ©“Helen Kagan Healing Arts” (see www.HelenKagan.com) has been a “one-person” enterprise, and I am an owner/founder AND a key member/entrepreneur… 🙂
Around 2005 I began to create more and more artwork first, for my own healing process, and since 2006 I’ve been consistently working in this modality while communicating my healing message to the communities. I want to ensure that my “Healing Arts” brand is communicated consistently and compellingly to galleries, curators, collectors, arts organizations, Hospitals, Medical Centers, Corporate Buildings, Hotels, and other audiences. I believe my “Healing Arts” has a big future!
If you ask me – How does your working day look like? I’d say – Usually crazy!! 🙂 One might think that being a “full time” artist entails some sort of a luxurious life style, like similar to what you see in the movies…:) But let me tell you that a “creative process” is not an easy thing… Really! Those who are familiar with various intricacies of a creative process of any nature, those who know that closely will agree with me, I think 🙂 So… my ‘working day’ might look like a regular ‘working day’ for most folks who work like 9-6 schedule, and then work another job on top of that for a few more hours :), or it might be totally crazy with a lot of actual painting time and lots of ‘processing’ time in-between which would result in like 20H ‘working day’… And then a lot of time is going to other (yet important) stuff like creating advertising materials, making prints, giclees, making photos & working with images of your art , creating and managing websites, and of course, making arrangements for shows and exhibits, inviting guests and collectors, actually providing and facilitating them, producing all possible marketing materials, etc. etc. etc. – well… you know it all, right? – it is CRAZY! 🙂 I think the actual time I spend painting is about 25-30%, if I’m lucky to have this time! Other 70-75% goes to everything else around your art career – of course, if you treat it as a career vs. hobby … For me – developing my unique brand ©“Healing Arts” and creating my unique artworks – is of course, a full time career!
I do sometimes work with different artists on various creative Projects. As an example you can check my other
website – www.ArtSynergism.com. I collaborated with another artist (legendary Garsot) to create a unique art Concept – ©ArtSynergism, and our unique and beautiful Products – so far we have 2 unique, synergistically created, Collections “Muses and Music” and “Zodiacs”.
But I see the main focus for my ©“Healing Arts” – is in the Corporate World. I think it is an interesting angle for our Interview… – a “solo – entrepreneur” is trying to engage the entire HealthCare System in integrating her “Healing Art” in public and private medical facilities – quite a task!, right? 🙂
I recently had an amazing Interview with WRBP iTV re: “Healing Arts in Healthcare “ https://youtu.be/c7kHX1CXTmk – this is a major direction for my ©”Healing Arts” I’ve been trying to work on, and am looking forward to develop nationally and internationally.
It is a Purpose and Mission of my Art.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
PROUDEST MOMENTS
For my Mind – when I was named a “Collectible Artist 2016” by Brickel and Key Biscayne Magazines; when I had a huge 20’x20′ Booth in SPECTRUM Miami 2016; when I was awarded a Solo Show in LightSpaceTime Gallery; actually many! 🙂
But… most importantly, for my Heart – when people say standing in front of my art – “I never felt so deep…” or “I’ve never seen anything so colorful and uplifting…” or “your art makes me feel so much happier!”…
This is why I have to do what I do – bring happiness, joy, well-being to people through my “Healing Arts”!
