Rising Stars: Meet Kenneth McMillan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth McMillan.

Hi Kenneth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started in West Philadelphia where I was born and raised, but I didn’t spend most of my days on the playground.

My days were spent playing video games with my friends and watching a lot of Miami-based content creators that I aspired to be like one day. While I was having those dreams, however, I had no idea how to get started nor did my parents have the funds nor any idea what being a content creator was at the time.

Also since my parents were split from a young age it made things a little difficult to figure out what dream I wanted to follow. My mom had her idea of what success looked like for me, which was an educated business person, and my dad his own, was a Professional Golfer.

In the end, I still managed to follow my own dream for myself by getting an education as my mom wanted and having some college golf success to satisfy my dad. thus, in the end, had the support of both through compromises. Somewhere at end of my high school and the beginning of my college education the Twitch feature came to PlayStation, and this would be the start of that dream of being a content creator really began.

Through a lot of ups and downs, breaks and returns, I’ve had a lot of successes and failures. From going taking breaks to catch up with schooling, and almost giving up on my dream, to going on gameshows hosted by twitch, doing interviews, and even participating in tournaments. Content creation is fun but it’s harder even though I realized it would be back then.

Even tougher still since back then, there weren’t many POC in the spotlight to look up to like there are now. However that never stopped me from making content friends, a lot of whom are from the Miami and Florida area. Since my start in this world of content creation.

I’ve had some success in my eyes from having videos that have had tens of thousands of views to having 30k+ on TikTok. Even though I’ve learned a lot I still have a long way to go and a lot I want to accomplish, I will accomplish those goals eventually but I’m just enjoying the ride as I go.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been the smoothest ride in the world since the world of content creation is always changing. Keeping up with trends and what’s going on at all times is tough. It can really take a mental toll on you and cause you to neglect your health that way.

Even personal matters such as family getting sick, or having to shift your focus to get a better job to keep the lights on. If you are not on top of communication with your community sometimes and providing updates and being somewhat vulnerable and honest, you could lose everything and have to start all over.

I myself had to restart a few times because of family medical issues and a lack of motivation because of mental health. However, you can bounce back from it all if you are consistent I feel.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a part-time content creator on YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch. I make videos and play video games on the internet for people’s enjoyment.

I’m most proud of the community and the following I’m able to build so far. Hopefully, I’m able to continue to build a community that spreads love and positivity to everyone that comes across it.

What sets me apart from others is my ability to be genuine and authentic, when you meet me and interact with me on social media you know you’re talking to the real me and not a persona, like others may try to put on.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice if you wanted to get into content creation is three things actually, one is to be consistent in what you do. It can be a slow process to get to where you’re going to enjoy the moments that come with it.

Secondly, is to make friends and genuine connections with people. Thirdly, and this is the most important, be yourself. People like it better when you are yourself and you don’t have to hide who you really are when the lights aren’t on.

The only thing I wish I would have known was how important consistency was, like yes it’s important but I think it’s more important than most actually realize and it’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
