Conversations with Jailene Jeantilus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jailene Jeantilus.

Jailene, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started when I had my first son back in 2020… I was adjusting back into the work environment after being on maternity leave for about three months. It never felt right for me to be away from my newborn baby for 12 whole hours each work shift. It really dawned on me when I realized I was pumping in a storage closet.

I just kept thinking ‘this cannot be the new mommy experience I had imaged”.

I knew I had to keep working to provide for my little one but I just couldn’t agree with it being at the cost of me barely being in his presence. I would start work at 6 AM and wouldn’t get home until roughly 7 PM but by then it was time to put him down to bed. It was a disappointing experience.

So during my downtime and during my break, I decided to write out different business ideas and business plans in a journal. One day, I finally took a leap of faith and actually backed these plans with actions. Bold and behold, I began selling shades.

Once that was steadily successful, I expanded into women’s clothing and took on clients for makeup.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely not a smooth road and I’m actually grateful that it wasn’t. Everything is a learning experience and I’ve learned from EVERY single stumble, bump, and pothole on the road along the way.

They don’t tell you about the trial and error, the struggle of funding the business out of pocket in the beginning, the drought seasons, the bad, the ugly… no one tells you the grit of it all behind owning a business, let alone multiple businesses.

Everything was learned along the way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in makeup and own an online clothing store. Being a makeup artist introduces the world to my creative mind while owning an online clothing store reveals the fashionista side of me.

I am proud of the progress and the growth. All the early mornings, late nights, sweat, tears, aches… were all worth it once I took a moment to take a step back to realize everything I prayed for was sitting in my hands.

My work is better than it was the previous year & that is why I am constantly striving to do better than I did the year before. I believe that is what sets me apart from others; I only compete with myself.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In business, you have to be a risk-taker. You won’t know if a goal is attainable until you take the risk towards achieving said goal.

There is a 50% chance of achieving a goal versus failing that same goal. So long as I am confident in my probability of succeeding, I would rather take the risk and at least try to succeed than to have not attempted at all.
