Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejah Smith.
Hi Dejah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello my name is Dejah Smith and my journey started in 2017 when I decided to change my lifestyle to being more mindful of what put inside of my body . I compromised my skin barrier so that made me curious to find out what I can do to repair it . I researched to see what could help and I also was coming across certain terminology that I didn’t understand.
Certain products that I would use would cause my skin to become more sensitized so I decided to make my own natural skincare products. I knew that was the only way I could know what was in the product. So, I started with lip balms and then lip scrubs because I felt that duo was not really being pushed to the social scene out as important.
Then, I started to do face scrubs and masks. I wanted to focus on ingredients that help with repairing the skin barrier since that was what my research consisted of. But also, other skin-related products that aren’t filled with chemicals. In 2018, I did start to do lash extensions since I was interested in ways to enhance the beauty and I fell in love with classics. So, to this day my specialty is classic lashes.
A little over a year and a half later I decided that I wanted to help others with their skin and do lash extensions but I had to be licensed. So, in 2019 I decided I’m going to get my esthetician license and I applied to Sheridan Technical and graduated in the summer of 2019. Covid hit the following year in March.
That took a turn for if I would continue but I took that time to see how I can perfect my craft and also my entire brand. I took several facial treatment courses, I learned how to do sugaring for hair removal. Now, I had more services under my belt and it helped me know which clients are for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel that anything you do is going to have some type of struggle.
I experienced having to close down my suite because I opened up in March of 2020 right after a skin convention that was shut down in New York City due to Covid. It was frustrating because I was ready to show my skills and educate potential clients.
I felt at the time maybe this isn’t for me. I honestly used the time that I wasn’t able to do services to learn other services that could potentially help me become a one-stop-shop.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed esthetician and I perform customized facials for multicultural skin looking for natural skincare. I offer Lash Extensions, Sugaring Hair Removal, and Bum Vacuum Enhancement Therapy. I am especially known for customized facials and using naturally derived ingredients and botanicals to help achiever a healthy Sincere Glow for all my amazing clients ! I strive to help my clients understand the health and overall wellness when it comes to their body and how the inside of the body reflects on the outside.
Also, facial massages are included in every facial treatment. I love doing facials, clients that come to me have a boost of confidence when they see their skin improving over time. It makes me proud to see clients being consistent and also knowing that they are learning more about their own skin.
I feel that I’m different from other estheticians because I genuinely want to see clients look and feel better about themselves but I also educate all my clients on what I’m doing and the ingredients versus just looking at it for the money.
How do you define success?
Success is always improving on your craft and learning from your mistakes.
I believe that being consistent is a major factor as well because it shows how dedicated you are and having the discipline to stay consistent is key as well!
