The story of CryptoConsultz starts the way every great story does– with a problem needing a solution. In 2016, Nicole DeCicco was a single mom working as a nurse, mining Ethereum in her garage. Her career change occurred after a hacker stole 323 ETH from her, worth well over $1 million today.
Driven to make cryptocurrency education more accessible, DeCicco launched CryptoConsultz. Security through knowledge is now a key tenant of the firm. She is passionate about making blockchain and cryptocurrency accessible to all and advocates for the mass adoption of cryptographic technologies.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Startups are never easy. Crypto startups are even more so. I face the same challenges most entrepreneurs do with an added twist. In 2016, I fell victim to, at the time, one of the only true full DNS attacks on a well-known reputable Ethereum wallet platform.
There was no way to avoid it and many of the safeguards we have now were not available. I had ordered my cold storage device, which was a relatively new concept at the time but it was back-ordered. Before it arrived in the mail, I was compromised and had 323 Ethereum hacked in one swoop.
I was devastated. Not only did it almost break me financially but it was a huge blow mentally. I realized though I was at a fork in the road and had a monumental decision to make. I contemplated folding up shop. The victim-blaming I received when reaching out to other crypto miners practically depleted my confidence and felt like being kicked while I was down.
I had spent the last year in my garage building, rebuilding, maintaining, and fumbling my way through my 18 GPU mining operation. I had sacrificed time with my daughter, family, and friends in order to build something I believed in even when almost everyone I was surrounded by thought I had lost my marbles. In a single moment, all that had been taken away. I felt I had lost my place in the crypto industry and instead of walking away, I was determined to build back what was stolen from me.
I started CryptoConsultz with the mission to support others entering the space educate themselves about the risks and navigate cryptocurrency investing using trusted sources of information. While we continue to support personal investors and blockchain education, we’re now seen as a leading consulting firm in the industry and are primarily supporting blockchain/Web3 businesses and businesses looking to adopt the technology into their current business model.
While my hack is still a sore subject, I can’t help but think about the incredible journey that’s led to where we are today. I’ve been fortunate enough to leave my previous career, travel the world (often with my daughter), speak at crypto conferences, and have had the opportunity to make meaningful connections with thought leaders all over the world who share the same passion for blockchain.
No longer am I the crazy person tinkering in her garage till the wee hours of the night but rather an influential woman in crypto with a pretty amazing story to tell.
