Today we’d like to introduce you to Cha’Vaughn Thompson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have worked in the education field for more than 10 years. As a teacher, I enjoyed seeing the joy that came across students’ faces who once doubted themselves but are now feeling more confident with the lesson.
I worked with students who did not understand the lesson but were too scared or shy to admit it. When providing one on one tutoring it allowed a student to be fully honest and transparent about what they needed more assistance with. If he/she did not understand a lesson, we worked on it until they mastered it.
In 2018, I started my tutoring business while working as a teacher. In 2020, I decided to take the leap of faith and work my business full time. Since then, I have been blessed to serve students virtually in several states including Florida, Texas, Virginia, and New York.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, it was difficult for me to devote the desired time to tutoring since I was also working as a teacher.
My teaching career came to an unexpected halt due to the pandemic and my unwillingness to be in the classroom while pregnant. This caused me to have to make some difficult decisions because I loved teaching and helping students however I did not want to put my health in jeopardy.
These life changes encouraged me to run my business full time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Getting Students Ahead?
Getting Students Ahead LLC is a virtual tutoring business where we provide one-hour tutoring sessions for students in K-12. We help students who are falling behind academically as well as provide students assistance to academically surpass their grade level.
To begin, we conduct an assessment to further understand each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses. We then customize an educational learning plan based on each student’s needs. We are blessed that students continue to surpass the goals set and equally blessed that parents are satisfied with the results and proud of their child’s progress.
One thing that sets Getting Students Ahead apart is that we make learning fun. Forming a healthy mentor-like tutor-student relationship helps students to build their confidence and improves their interpersonal skills. To facilitate an engaging, interactive learning experience we incorporate educational games into lessons.
We form long-lasting relationships with students and incorporate age-appropriate praises as rewards. For example, we allow them to do a happy dance once they get hard questions correct and many of our students like to do “The Dab”.
