Today we’d like to introduce you to Noemi Katan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am from Venezuela, an architect, a creative, a wife, and a mother of two. My greatest passion is design in any of its expressions.
As an architect, I did two master’s degrees in Spain. I am a specialist in virtual representation for architecture, and I have also dedicated myself to furniture design, especially in wood.
The design and creation of jewelry pieces was my hobby for a long time. It all started because my brother, who imported haberdashery materials, gave me many beads and silk and cotton threads, which were the seeds of what I do today.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
During the lockdown, I had a lot of time to create and design new pieces, but the pandemic was especially hard for us. I lost my parents to COVID in Venezuela and that left me without the energy to do many things.
Strangely, one thing that I was motivated to do was knit my pieces, combine colors, and stones, probably because my mom was always my inspiration. She used lots of necklaces and rings in many colors and was a great admirer of my work.
I continue working in my workshop from home, producing new pieces every day. My new collection will be based on reusing many of the vintage pieces that I have from my mother’s necklaces and bracelets and thus giving them new meaning with my style.
This inspires and drives me a lot.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My style is mostly bohemian and hippie. I like to combine natural stones, wood, glass, and metals with woven cotton thread.
The basis of my designs is crocheted necklaces combined with chains and stones. My pieces are very lightweight and unique. Each piece is designed not to be repeated, and it is very difficult for me to make two similar items.
I have also explored casting dyed resin into pieces of molded wire to make pendants and rings. This allows me to create much more with combinations of colors and metals.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Key Biscayne because is a beautiful family living place. We are close to Brickell and downtown, we have the ocean, the parks, great schools, and everything you need to have a wonderful life here!!!!
