Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Gutman.
Hi Ron, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I have been a technology and healthcare entrepreneur my entire life. Over the past 30 years, I have spent much of my career building and investing in companies in Silicon Valley that have been at the forefront of the digital health revolution and areas such as telehealth.
In addition, I serve as an adjunct professor at Stanford where I teach leadership and behavioral design. My focus is on life optimization and longevity; I lead a diverse group that brings together inventors, investors, and entrepreneurs. Life optimization is about risk mitigation, so our group has also included disease specialists. Of note are the discussions we would have about a disease that was emerging that would soon be known as COVID-19.
In early February 2020, I authored an article that detailed the risks of COVID-19 and explained why it posed profoundly serious health risks. I became interested in the notion of testing and realized how important it would be in responding to the disease; we started to work on the development of a test and that was how we built Intrivo.
I fell in love with South Florida because I love the outdoors and realized it was a suitable place for entrepreneurship and bedrock for healthcare. South Florida has a large concentration of people who are aging and as a result, the area’s population is a tremendous consumer of healthcare. Leading healthcare organizations such as the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic have a presence here.
So, South Florida is a hub for digital health. I recognized that there was an opportunity to build a company and create a center for digital health. Since we launched Intrivo, the company has grown very quickly. We have moved a sizable portion of our production to the Miami area, and it now has expanded to numerous facilities.
Our headquarters are here, and a significant part of our core team is here. We believe in South Florida, and it will play an important part in our future.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are challenges every day, especially when innovation and change in Silicon Valley occur at lightning speed. Moreso for healthcare, there are challenges due to the fact that the industry is highly regulated and has been historically behind the curve when it comes to innovation.
Factor in the fact that you are dealing with people’s lives and well-being, and there is no shortage of challenges. We have been successful because of our innovation and speed to market. We have created a technology that ultimately improves people’s lives and well-being.
But business and entrepreneurship will continue to change, and so there will always be new challenges we must face. But finding solutions to those challenges is what makes it both rewarding and gratifying. We are driven by the notion of leveraging technology to help people live better lives.
That said, it’s important to enjoy the journey and bring together exciting people and ideas that can help overcome those new challenges. Certainly, in the early days of the pandemic, there were many challenges, but I love learning and it has helped me get through these difficult periods.
It’s one of the reasons why I teach. The ability to interact with and learn from students helps me to stay current on innovation and other developments and equips me with the knowledge and insights needed to confront new challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Intrivo?
Intrivo is a digital health company with a technology and platform that is helping the world to tackle the next health challenges and helping people live happier, healthier, and safer lives.
The most important accomplishment of my life has been being able to develop one of the first digital health and telehealth companies that measurably saved lives. That’s really what drives me, and we have been able to do it again with Intrivo.
These tests save lives. Our tests have enabled people to determine whether they have the virus and take preventative steps to protect themselves and others, which can then reduce the spread of the disease. We created a product that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people. We have not only helped them but also made society safer.
To have had this impact on a global scale is meaningful and something of which I am enormously proud.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am an islander. I love the beach. I also like gardening. I love nature and being in nature and outdoors as much as possible, which is easy to do in South Florida!
