Conversations with 88thagang

Today we’d like to introduce you to 88thagang.

Hi 88thagang, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since 2010, I’ve always made beats. I actually started on an itouch lol there’s an app call Beatmaker 2 that allowed me to make beats but in 2018, I started recording in San Diego from my garage where I met “lil Weirdo” he had came in to do a feature with a session I was recording and I heard how fast he laid down his verse. First, I thought this kid sounds like he 7’1; from there, I reached out and we came to a monthly fee to record lol like $130 to record whenever then from there, he introduced me to Rappers SMOKEYGM, RG and Young Rich and more. around the same time I started making beats for lil weirdo we released back to back visuals “How we Rock” “no co-sign” “natural” “road trips” during this time I was putting together a tape called “Zoo” featuring San Diegos buzzing artist lil weirdo SMOKEYGM Pancho gm Sethii Schmactt Yhg Pnut acetakemillions, SAMISIDEFLY, Hardini and more this project has a bonus song called “D R O P” …this song is how I got my tag “ima tap in 88 he got them chops on em” artist young rich owned a studio in la mesa California where he actually plugged me to be able to get a bit next to his studio where I ended up record half of zoo2 this allowed me to reached out in person to more the artist all from different parts of San Diego this is when I started making zoo two that features songs jankyassgeez FEAT SIETENAMEDKEEK and like sada feat B3 GLIZZY And more the reviews from the project liked the nonbias selection of artist and the unique sound with skits and storytelling in-between tracks and an actual message.

2019 -2020 me and lil weirdo releases songs that would put him at San Diego’s hottest artist

2021

After thanks to DJ Bar1ne, he invited me to a session with Dom Kennedy; from there Dom Kennedy listened and picked like 6-7 beats, from there one of San Diego’s Community Leaders A&r a track “valet” to be released on his latest project his trilogy “From the Westside With Love Three” from there I’ve always made it a thing to continue to tap in with more artist.

Same year I produced an ep called “Ghetto Rockstar ” byB3 GLIZZY which landed us on tour opening for “Kalan FRFR” TWOFR TOUR also thanks to DJ Bar1ne.

NOW, I’m working on multiple projects with artists from the bay all the way back down to southeast San Diego.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In San Diego a lot of street politics control the music scene this was a that most dangerous obstacle “certain collabs with specific people from different sides of the town” hadn’t been done since the release of a San Diego classic ‘Cherry Chuck Gang’ CD back in 2012 this was revolutionary for San Diego as it saw members from rival gang sets coming together as one and recording for the betterment of the San Diego Streets. I’ve always pushed to mend the music scene by connecting dots.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
MUSIC PRODUCER, I own a studio located Downtown San Diego, CA.

I’ve been making beats since 08′.

What set me apart from most beatmakers a lot of the song creation is hands on; I like to help “guide the vibe”.

I AM SAN DIEGOS SOUND.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
