Daily Inspiration: Meet Vanessa Palomino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Palomino.

Hi Vanessa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was always interested in art and photography growing up. I remember always having a point-and-shoot camera and doing little photoshoots with my sister or cousins, but I didn’t pick up a camera until two years ago. Two years ago, I was in a rut and needed to learn a hobby to shift my focus. I went into my closet and took my camera out of a box and started learning manual mode. I started off as a hobbyist. I shot everything from flowers to buildings to documenting my niece’s moments with me. I started to really enjoy photography and it helped me climb out of the rut I was in. I branched out and photographed families and couples. As I did this, the parts of me that were in pain healed me. Every family I met brought me such great joy. When I get recurring clients, it feels like we are old friends catching up. Photography is the one thing that brings me a lot of joy and the reason that Vanessa Palomino Photography was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When photography was a hobby, it was a smooth road. The struggles came when I made it a business. I had to dedicate a lot of time to build my website, to learn SEO (still a huge learning process), to marketing all while balancing a full-time job, a relationship and a personal life. Boundaries are huge and that’s what is helping now.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in family and couples photography. I love capturing raw and genuine moments between family members and couples. The in-between moments of posing are my favorite. I love candid photography, and I ensure I prompt families or partners to interact with one another to get some genuine laughter or moments together.

What sets me apart from others is that I love being part of the process before a photo session. I want to get to know my clients so I follow my clients on Instagram. I use Instagram to help me get to know them- what makes them laugh or upset or what type of style they have. I want to feel like a friend they can rely on.

I am most proud of my business when I have recurring clients. Those clients are fully aware of the journey I have been on from how I capture moments to how I edit. When they come back knowing this, it makes me so proud of myself.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In any industry, there are trends that fade. I see many new editing trends that will probably fade. Mirrorless cameras will get much better and there will be a huge demand for them. We will be able to not only see a scene but explore images through Virtual Reality.
