Conversations with Jamar Alexis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamar Alexis.

Hi Jamar, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself and how you got started.
Thank you for having me! My name is Jamar and I’m a photographer servicing the South Florida area, primarily the Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. It’s crazy to think about because I realized I’ve always loved photography, I just never knew it. Going back to my childhood whenever we would have small family gatherings or trips, I would always be taking pictures making sure to get the best angles, work with the lighting, edit them, all of the above! Over quarantine in 2020, thanks to COVID, I had the opportunity to reflect on life and what I enjoy doing, which led me to the idea of starting up a photography page on Instagram. Believe it or not, I started off with just using Adobe’s Lightroom to edit pictures I had taken on different vacations with cellphones. From there, I started shooting some of my friends and some how some way, it grew into the photography brand that I own today. I guess it was God at work behind the scenes because I enjoy it so much, it has become a great outlet to express myself and my unique perspective in different ways.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth ride to start off with. Photography is a great hobby in my opinion, but it can be very inconsistent, especially if it isn’t your number one priority. When I was first getting started and advertising my services, trying to get shoots with clients, it was very difficult to get jobs because I didn’t have any sort of portfolio. I really had to grind, constantly shooting with friends and family, to build up about half a portfolio and be taken seriously. Now I’m really proud of my work and how far I’ve come. I believe that I’ve captured and edited some incredible moments/scenes so far, but I’m also extremely excited because I know that my best work is ahead of me.

Thanks – so what should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer working out of the South Florida area specializing in portrait/fashion/sports/event photography. What sets me apart from other local photographers is my affordability. I recognize that a lot of photographers are extremely expensive, and it becomes almost a roadblock for people to be able to hire professionals to capture major life events for them because of concerns around costs, especially considering today’s economy. I want to remain accessible while still producing high-quality shots, and that’s what I’ve been able to do so far. Besides that, I’m most proud of how far I’ve come, from shooting on iPhones to having a camera, several lenses, lighting kits, and being proficient in Adobe’s Photoshop and Lightroom.

What sort of changes in the industry are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I’m not sure about how the photography industry is changing in all honesty. I feel that it’s something that will always be around and relevant, regardless of the new technological advances like the Metaverse. People will always want to capture portraits of their family, loved ones, and major life moments.
