Conversations with Mayra Alejandra Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Alejandra Serrano.

Hi Mayra Alejandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always liked working with children, therefore, I decided to study education, a profession that has much to offer to the world and for helping many families to maintain values; principles and help children believe in their potential and create imagination, ingenuity and emotional intelligence.

Later in my path as a teacher, I coincided with a school for children with autism “Centro de Entrenamiento para la Integración y el Aprendizaje” (CEPIA). Where I began to work and enjoy a totally different educational experience. It filled my soul and heart every day for being better and to offer the best of my knowledge to our children with autism, in that process that I got a postgraduate degree in psychoeducational care of autism where I’m currently specialize.

As a director of “Centro Integral para la Enseñanza” A dream fulfilled for several years ago. A place that emphasizes the learning process from love and respect, a space to learn through play, structured teaching and a place of student’s opportunities. My day-to-day focuses on children’s care with autism from a pedagogical perspective.

My job is to train autonomous children capable of being an independent person in school, thus improving their attention, concentration, writing, memory, reading and social skills. Also it makes many people aware of what this condition is, providing strategies to parents and families for a better quality of life. Advise teachers and health specialists that autism spectrum disorders go beyond a condition.

My daily work has allowed me to get to know the qualities of each one of my children, to explore and to know that they have many virtues to share with the world, therefore, I am committed to an inclusive education, where the right to inclusion is not a favor, it is a window to live and learn in a different and innovative way and with opportunities for everyone. Also, I work with children who require an academic leveling, pedagogical reinforcement and neurotypical children who attend a consultation to level their knowledge to the academic degree they provide me smiles and fill my heart with happiness For knowing their achievements at school, home and social environment.

All these interventions and advices are provided in person and online for national and international countries.

Another of my projects is www.learningworld-edu.com, a website that is dedicated to training mothers, fathers, teachers and students in avant-garde topics related to education and health, with excellent collaborators where we guide from different perspectives for families to assist them in the educational and parenting process.

@somoslearningworld is a page in charge of training and giving away resources to work with our children in the different areas of development according to the age that the child is. A platform that allows me to connect with different people internationally in order to learn and keep informing about the latest educational and science studies.

On the other hand, I am the coordinator of an early stimulation center, “Centro de Desarrollo Integral La Oruga”, a space dedicated to early stimulation, starting at seven months, providing guidance to parents and families from a comprehensive focus with different specialties. Such as psychology, occupational therapy, language therapy and psychopedagogy therapy to support families that could have a member with neurodevelopmental disorders within their nucleus.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Throughout the process, there were ups and downs, my country (Venezuela) has undergone many social, cultural, economic changes, among others, which has made us resilient and more courageous to fight for what we want, thanks God and my family who have given me support all the times and have allowed me to continue growing as a professional and advancing for our society and abroad.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a teacher, and I specialize in autism spectrum disorders. Thanks to my work and knowledge, I have been recognized in the educational field at a national and international level, which has motivated me to continue guiding and supporting, but above all, providing joy, learning, and autonomy to children with disabilities, but also to children who, without having disabilities need individual, interest-based learning to achieve meaningful goals.

I am proud of my work, of what I achieve day after day and also that thanks to information, society is gaining knowledge about the differences we have as people, the importance of empathy for interpersonal relationships and thus having a society with greater culture in different areas, greater awareness of the support that people with autism require and the importance of understanding that we are all unique and different.

What does success mean to you?
Success is defined by perseverance, by always believing in our hearts and intuition. Success is a word that broadens different definitions, however, I believe that success goes hand in hand with motivation and perseverance to find our destiny, our peace, personal and professional growth.
