Jasmine Rivera, a High-Heel Wearing, Web Designing, Brand Building, Social Media Developing, Melanin Woman. Since Jasmine can remember, she’s always held an interest in art and design, in some form or another.
She’s built and managed brands from the ground up, worn every hat on the rack and leaped tall expectations in a single bound. Don’t let her clean lines and weakness for Script font fool you; this is all a plot for world mass Marketing Media domination, one brand at a time.
Design started as young as she can remember. It all took off in 2013, when she honed in on her passion for arts and design, attending The Art Institute of New York City, which later brought her back to her roots in Florida. Continuing her education at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where she graduated with an Associate of Science Degree in Web Design & Interactive Media. She quickly realized that designing websites was indeed where her skillset shined yet she realized that the most prominent websites didn’t just have interactive design there was more to the process.
Having no real-world experience she was at a stage of giving up on her passion, never being given the opportunity to show how a young woman in tech could be what was missing in the industry. She then started with the people who supported her the most, fast-forwarding to 2016, when her Grandmother Gloria who was a renowned crochet clothing designer passed away. She inherited all of her beautiful designs something that her father said she could capitalize on, just as her grandmother was doing. Growing up in a household of entrepreneurs, having the tools and support only meant it was an opportunity worth taking. Having to obtain an LLC, design a logo, create a mission, collect data, cipher through leads while accounting for the inventory only made her realize the steps needed to just begin to put together the pieces for designing a website.
“Web site development doesn’t just start with obtaining a www. domain and purchasing a hosting site, helping others find what really makes their business stand out was the mission,” says Jasmine. Her passion quickly developed, assisting new minority business owners to start their businesses from start to finish.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Often the challenges faced were the barriers I put on myself. My early struggle was believing women can be in the Technology industry, it dates back to my ancestors and the women’s equality movement. I later found out it was running the business by myself, I later partnered with a skilled graphic designer Tav Washington CEO and founder of Kept Designs who shared his talents with my clientele. I then found that working a full-time job and pursuing my passion started to feel impossible. Having to outsource the design aspect and hone in on the consultant part of the business made for an easy transition.
