Life & Work with Yomara Gourdet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yomara Gourdet.

Hi Yomara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, since I was little, I have really liked the production of digital content and photography. I remember that I used to take pictures of every sunset I saw.

Two years ago, when I was living in Shreveport, Louisiana was when I started to get more involved in photography remember I was looking at photos on Pinterest and I remember that sub-realistic photography caught my attention and I said to myself: “I can also take pictures like that..” So that’s when I decided to buy my first digital camera, I started reading books, articles and taking online photography courses. I started asking my friends to help me by being my models, and so I started taking my first photos, which at that time were surreal photos. After a while, I began little by little to get involved in other types of photography. And that’s how I decided to move to Miami, where I currently live, to be able to dedicate myself more to photography. Months after my arrival in Miami, I decided to start classes at the Miami Institute of Photography for six months. Currently, I dedicate myself to the creation of digital content and photography. I work on my own and also through the page of freelancer.com.

A few months ago, I started posting videos on my Tiktok account, where I create videos showing places to travel in different cities in the United States. I show places where you can go for free, places where you can go without spending a lot of money, restaurants and fun places. Currently in my TikTok account, I have 32.4k followers and thanks to my account, I am earning money and I have even worked with some travel brands or things related to my content.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing comes easy, I have had ups and downs throughout this whole process. I’m not where I want to be yet, so I still have a long way to go. But if I see it from where I am now, if I have achieved many things in this time, of course I have had my obstacles but nothing that I will not be able to solve.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a digital content creator and I work as a photographer and freelancer in Miami. I have two accounts on Instagram where I post my content. In one of them, I publish urban content. I do street photography.

I recently opened another Instagram account in which I’m working on something that I myself call “My retro empire”, where I want to show people the life of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

I also make videos on TikTok, where I have started to gain popularity through my videos, which have helped me a lot. I currently have more than 32.4k followers on my account and more than 40 viral videos. The main idea of my account is to give advice to people who like to travel. I tell experiences, I give advice, tips on where to go, what things to do and even places where you can go for free or for little money. Thanks to my TikTok account, I have made some brands want to work with me and I have even met other people who are dedicated to doing the same as me. Many times it happens to me that people follow me and write to me on my Instagram account to ask for advice on something specific, and that fills me with great joy, knowing that there are people who like my content and even need my help.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Well, I always say that luck is nothing more than a fact caused by circumstances or decisions that we make every day. If I hadn’t decided to move to Miami maybe none of this would be happening equally if I hadn’t decided to open a TikTok account and post videos on it, none of this would be happening. Sure, you guys are going to tell me, but not everyone is doing well on TikTok, well, you’re right. Not everyone does well and that’s because to succeed on TikTok you need to share something that is interesting, funny, etc. When I started posting videos, I had no results until I changed the content. At first, I posted videos teaching photography tips, which didn’t have much results, until one day I said to myself: “Why don’t I post videos of the places I’ve visited?”. So that’s how I decided to post my first travel video. Which had a greater number of views and likes than the previous videos. Then I knew: “This is the kind of content I should do, three days later one of my videos became the first semi-viral video of the account. And that’s where it would all start…
