Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Ortega.
Hi Priscilla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My main focus is commercial real estate. I started by calling any for sale or rent by owner signs I could see. I slowly grew a database of clients. Some clients were seller/landlords, others were tenants/buyers. It was a find a match game to me, and I loved it. I created relationships with many management companies and other brokers.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was not always easy. I had to learn what type of businesses were accepted at certain places. I became to learn which properties had associations that would allow certain businesses. It was also tricky with zoning with the city. For example, mechanics in certain areas were no longer allowed and although you saw mechanic businesses there didn’t mean my client would get approval with the city. About 70% of the time the other like businesses were grandfathered in. I would assist clients in the due diligence process. The worst thing would be getting a client into a space and not getting city’s approval. They would be subject to pay the lease. These tricky situations I’ve learned with food, churches, gyms, and so on. Experience really is an important asset when selecting an agent.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in commercial real estate sales and leases. My specialty is industrial real estate although I have practiced in retail, land, office, and multifamily. I really push social media. I always make my presence known in that I work in real estate and not just residential. Many people recognize me because it is not common to work with an experienced commercial real estate agent that is a woman. Whenever someone in my office has a question or concern about commercial real estate everyone’s response is almost always “Did you ask Priscilla?” I hope to continue to break the glass ceiling on women in commercial real estate. It should not only be a male-dominated industry. Commercial is a great focus industry for me also a transitioning stepping stone. Most commercial clients have residential needs. I assist them in both.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Most brokers have clients or leads for commercial that they simply do not know where to start. I offer the agent to let me assist their client and I’ll be sure to repay them with a fee. I also offer them to shadow me throughout the process, so they can learn to do it on their own. I encourage other realtors to work with me when not familiar with commercial to help their clients, they learn in the long run and complete a successful transaction.
