Today we’d like to introduce you to Debora Abreu.
Hi Debora, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always loved to dance and started taking other instructor’s classes when I was 19, I would go by myself and most of the time, I felt like I didn’t fit in, but I would still go because dancing made me feel really good. In June of 2019 when I was 23, I started teaching twerk classes with another girl at the time, I didn’t have experience teaching to a group of people, but it kinda just came to me and I started getting better day by day. In January of 2020, I decided to move forward on my own due to the high amount of passion that I have and my vision was not aligning with the other person anymore. It honestly has been the best thing I’ve ever done for myself and for my business. I named my dance company Confidanca which means Confi for Confidence and Danca is a Portuguese word for DANCE. This has been my purpose from day one to teach my students how to gain and express confidence through dance and to bring a group of empowering women together and men too (men also take my classes and they’re always welcome). In the past two years, I’ve gotten so many feedbacks from people on how the classes have changed their self-confidence and or taken them away from depression, when new people come to Confidanca classes, they feel a very welcoming environment and most people always come back. This journey has also helped me personally to become a better choreographer and has helped me in many ways mentally and physically.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, when I started doing it on my own it was really hard because at the same time that I believed I could create something big, a lot of people didn’t come along with me at first and that made me have a lot of doubts. But my family always believed in me and I decided to believe in myself too because I feel like that’s the most important thing. During these times, I always remember that If I don’t do it for myself, no one else will and always keep being persistent even on the hardest moments.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I started teaching, I would only focus on Twerk choreographies, but I always had the passion to create heels / sexy choreographies but I thought I was never good enough so I would hire other instructors to teach in my company. It wasn’t until I decided to give it a try people started loving my choreographies and they only get better day by day. Like I’ve mentioned before consistency is the key. Now I am known not only for my twerk choreographies but also heels/ floorwork. During summer of 2021, I also decided to open my own clothing business and that has been great since now everyone can have a piece of Confidanca and feel like they’re a part of it. I am most proud of always standing up for myself and take every moment of life as a lesson to keep getting better at what I do and keep working hard toward my goals.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
There’s a risk in everything you do in life, if you decide to stay on your comfort zone and not take risks, you’re still risking on staying the same and maybe hating your life. So I would rather take risks towards something I believe in because at the end of the day, you could create something big or learn a big lesson for every risk you take. Risks are necessary and if you’re going to take it towards a business always keep in mind that there may be loss, but it’s for a bigger purpose, you will always learn something good out of it if you’re willing.
