Rising Stars: Meet Tyler Zager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Zager.

Hi Tyler, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started baking with my grandma from a very young age. From then on, I started to help my mom out with dinner every night. That eventually lead to me applying to be on multiple TV shows. I then won Food Network’s Kids BBQ Championship. I later hosted Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network. After being on these shows, I began charity work with No Kid Hungry. I hosted monthly bake sales at my local farmer’s markets and raised over $30,000. I then shifted my work to Feeding South Florida. There I created their Youth Ambassador Program where kids meet to advocate and encourage others to get involved with Feeding South Florida. I still volunteer there today. I will be graduating high school in May and I plan on attending Cornell University in the fall and will be majoring in Hotel Administration.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I was on the Kids BBQ Championship, it was very challenging. Filming everyday for hours at a time in a very competitive environment wasn’t easy. I also had the challenge of gaining new members and other kids who were interested in joining the Youth Ambassador at Feeding South Florida when we first initiated the program.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of winning the Food Network’s Kids BBQ Championship. I took my passion and proved to others what I was capable of and how invested I was into cooking. I now cook at home regularly and continue my charity work at Feeding South Florida. I post all of my food on my Instagram @tyler.zager. I post anything from restaurant reviews to home-cooked meals to travel pictures there.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned is to never give up and to not listen to any of the negativity that others say about you. Others will try to shoot down what you love to do and you need to tune them out and to continue to do what you love to do.
