Today we’d like to introduce you to Humberto Torres.
Hi Humberto, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started a podcast after high school that consisted of me interviewing local artists from South Florida and that’s what got me into the scene initially. It was honestly a lot of trial and error (mostly errors) that brought me to where I’m able to provide a platform and create a community of people that come together at these events.
Last July, I was feeling lost coming off of running a magazine (Project Foreword) with my best friends. Because we were building this audience online and chasing likes/comments but after we’d post our stuff after weeks of producing and the guys editing, it felt pointless.
So when we put a pause to it, I came back to the drawing board and asked myself “What do YOU wanna do?” and it’s been all gas no brakes from there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Uhmmm….. not really.
It was hard selling venues of the idea of the markets at first because there’s already so many so getting denied was inevitable. Especially when you’re not even old enough to rent a car and you’re just telling them what you’d like to do because you’re still trying to get it off the ground.
But a lot of helpful people like the guys at Cardinal Labs and Unbranded Brewing offered us their locations for the first events to go down.
It’s really the entire community built from these markets that make it all worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d like to think of myself as some sort of Communal Architect. I like to bring like-minded individuals together and create worlds where ideas or conversations can be born and manifest themselves into real life.
I think I’m just known for throwing fun shows, they’re never perfect but they’re always fun.
I’m proud of the relationships that have been built from me putting people under the same for a few hours. It’s so tight seeing these kids that have been supporting each other online for months, even years finally meet and collaborate down the line. Because that was the entire reason why I wanted to do these events in the first place, so it’s kind of like a reminder that I’m doing a good job and following my intentions.
Because that’s what really sets this community and I apart from any other thing going down in Miami. The intention of supporting each other because it’s the only way any of us can grow.
There’s already enough gatekeeping and ego’s in the world, so if I can continue to show these people that there’s enough room for us all to win. But it can’t happen if we don’t lift each other up.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Watching music videos on MTV at 7AM before school. I wanted to be Pharrell in the Rockstar video so bad.
