Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillodel Black.
Phillodel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am known socially as “Phyllii”. I was born and raised in the beautiful country of Jamaica. I am a mother to two beautiful children, Jah Jah & Xuri Black, and wife to a very supportive husband Omar Black and this encapsulates my driving force and team.
As a Jamaican, it is embedded in you from birth the love for our rich heritage and apart of this is our Vibrant Fashion & Beauty industry. As such, growing up in such a rich culture fermented my love for these industries. So much so that I became very engaged in these fields whilst attending university.
Growing up as a young charismatic individual who loves to explore, I loved the idea of being my own boss as my parents were. I had a strong mind that one day I’d become a Boss Bae. With this love and seeing the need to add vibrancy to the lives of the beautiful women in my country and by extension the world, I created my amazing luxurious business venture “Xo Links”, which is a Luxury Microlinks Hair Extension Brand.
Armed with the drive to broaden my horizon but also increase my knowledge in these industries, I moved to Florida and got trained to become a cosmetologist. Being one of the first to introduce Modern Microlinks Extensions to my home country, I decided to open the first location of Xo Beauty Loft in the city of Kingston Jamaica. I have created job opportunities, educated and motivated females in becoming their own boss. I am passionate and focused on helping more young women design, launch and scale their own Microlinks businesses because entrepreneurship is anything but transparent.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Looking back, I think the biggest obstacle I ever faced would be the loss of my mom when I was around the age of 20 years old. This was the turning point in my life where I developed the mindset that “I can and I will. Nothing tried, nothing done”. This was so because at no point in my life whilst growing up with my Mom did I ever see her give up, even when she was faced with the hardest battles of her life before she succumbed to her illness.
As such, I am guided daily that no matter what difficulty may occur whilst carrying out my activities to maintain the brands I represent, I will never be dismayed. To further cement how undaunted I can be, I remember getting pregnant and I started losing interest in doing daily work tasks which became frustrating as I had to cancel orders that were placed. However, I remembered the words of my mom constantly coaching me as a child when I would become demotivated and allowed those words to push me every day to overcome whatever I was facing.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My best childhood memory would definitely be growing up as a rural “country” girl in Jamaica. As a child in rural Jamaica, the leisure of playing sports, climbing fruit trees, and even having the ability to go on family trips across the country will never be matched no matter where in the world you travel to. I remember vividly my first mind-blowing experience of visiting the river as a child and getting the freedom to frolic in the sand and cold waters that streamed into the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.
This love for the river was so embedded in my life that I decided to name my first business venture as such. It is without a doubt now why I have my children visit the river when they travel to Jamaica and allow them to bask in the beauty of my fondest childhood activity.
