Today we’d like to introduce you to Briah Christia.
Hi Briah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For most of my time on this earth I have played basketball and I played the point guard position. I graduated high school in the year of 2020. Going into my senior year of high school, I had a scholarship offer to play at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. Thirty days after committing to Georgia Southern, my offer was reneged on because the coaching staff wanted a taller point guard. After the offer was reneged on, I had other opportunities to go and play college basketball at other schools. However, at the time I was done with the whole idea of playing college basketball because it was no longer fun for me. I felt as if I loved basketball and it never loved me back. Fast forward to the year of 2021; this is my first full year without playing basketball. 2021 has by far been the most difficult year of my life because I had no idea what else I would do or what else I would be good at now that I no longer had basketball. However, it took time, patience, and prayer for me to figure out purpose all over again and what I was interested in. Along the journey of finding out purpose and what I am interested in, I found myself falling in love with podcasting and coaching. I am young, but yet I have seen and been through so much. I feel that at this point in my life, I have so much to give.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing in life is ever a smooth road, especially if it is something of value or worthwhile. Along my journey, I have dealt with rejection and being told no. Being able to pick yourself up after hardships and adversities is one of the most strenuous and difficult things in life. After I stopped playing basketball, I felt no purpose, worth, or value. In the year of 2021, I have even had suicidal thoughts because I had no direction or any idea of what else I was good at or what else I was on this Earth to do. However, time has a job, God has a plan, and life has a course to take.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
During the time of trying to find purpose again after deciding not to play basketball, I have found out a lot about myself, and who I am, and my interest. I genuinely believe that I was put on this Earth for others and to be able to give. At the beginning of the year 2022, I will be starting a podcast by the name of Box and One: The Podcast. Starting a podcast puts me in the position to be able to be a giver of wisdom and knowledge. In addition to starting a podcast, I have also started coaching basketball. When the basketball stopped bouncing for me, I wondered why I began to play basketball in the first place. Coaching has answered that question for me. God puts things in the hands of the giver. Being able to share my knowledge of the game of basketball has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am most proud of my resilience. I found myself in a drought for most of the year of 2021. However, I knew that I could not stay in that dark place for forever. I believe my ability to be able to just figure things out is what sets me apart from others. There has been many of times where my back has been against the wall, but the goal for me has always been to just figure it out no matter how long that took for me.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I am from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, born and raised. What I love most about our city is our ability to be able to stick together and support each other. There are so many entrepreneurs and business owners that come out of our city, and most of them know each other because they support each other. I think that the support and love that comes out of Florida is a beautiful thing. There is not much that I don’t like about our city, especially at this current time. What I will say is that people in our city has not always supported each other. However, over time, we have gotten a lot better with supporting each other and showing up for each other.
