Life & Work with 12EYES

Today we’d like to introduce you to 12EYES. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Johnathan Hulett (drums/vocals) recently moved back to Miami and had the idea of forming a trio with Tim Watson (guitar/fx) and Dion Kerr (bass/percussion). As an unnamed band, they led a weekly residency at The Anderson during the summer and packed more of a crowd each show. The band felt like they were on to something as they solidified their musical arrangements and hit the studio to legitimatize the group. In the studio, the name 12EYES was thrown out during a brainstorming session and just stuck. The members of 12EYES have opened for and shared the stage with artists such as Thundercat, Nicholas Payton, and Erykah Badu and are all members of other prominent south Florida-based groups such as SHENZI, The Smoogies, Seafoam Walls and The Ignacio Berroa Trio.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Musically it has always been an easy journey because of the instant chemistry that we have had as a trio. Our goal is to be able to bridge the gap between the art and music scenes in Miami. The current show we are writing is both a sonic and visual show that encompasses a wide range of influences that we have. Everyone in the band is a musician and an artist so we all input creatively into everything we are doing which is the best band dynamic we could ask for.

We are curating our first concert for this series December 19th at Purple Palms Creative.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The group merges high-energy improvisation, outer-worldly soundscapes, and compelling lyricism to create a live performance experience unique to Miami’s eclectic music scene. This multi-talented multi-instrumentalist trio creates a sonic journey that is constantly propelling the music forward. 12EYES was formed out of a communal necessity for wanting to break structures in music and the desire to leave the bandstand with having left nothing behind.

What matters most to you? Why?
The message.
