Today we’d like to introduce you to Lia Abels.
Hi Lia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was raised in a middle-class family with my siblings. I had a hard-working mom and lived a fairly normal childhood. One thing I was always pointed out for was my giftedness. I was really smart. Any class I took was IB, AP, or Honors. I excelled academically and creatively. But nothing really motivated me in my early years. Lots of talent but no real intent or purpose.
I think that after I graduated high school and started “adulting” is when I started to want more for myself in life. During that time, I was able to do a lot of souls searching. God led me to experience a lot of things that ultimately taught me to really appreciate life.
After a few years of college and working in the corporate world, I decided that time was too precious and sweet to be spending it doing things that didn’t make me happy or make me feel good. Humbly speaking, I am Chosen. God wanted me to live out the life he designed for me. And it was full of quality. So I knew I could no longer play it small (which I had did for so long up until that point). I started my company and brand Lia’s Locker in 2019. Later that year, I found I was pregnant with my first child and she honestly became my biggest motivating factor and my reason why. I felt determined to build an empire for us.
Becoming a mom just made me stand up 10 feet taller. Everything I was good at before I’m great at now. A lot of the things I wanted to do before I just gained the courage to do now. I owe a lot of who I am now and what I’ve accomplished to my daughter. And Christ ❤️
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Staying consistent was pretty hard while being a new mom and still having other obligations and commitments. Being a makeup artist takes a lot of focused time to perfect your craft. I have to do a lot of content creating to market my services. Marketing is a major part of running a business and it’s one of the things you just have to make time for. Imagine having to cook and clean, run errands, work, create 3 hours of content for your business, Take the baby a bath all while trying to squeeze at least 15 minutes of self-care into your day. I had a hard time at first getting my time management together but scheduling and keeping organized has saved me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup artist. I specialize in glam makeup, eyebrow tinting and lash installations. I am most proud of my growth not only in my skill set as an artist but also as a businesswoman. What sets me apart from others is I am a very passionate person. Everything I do is with purpose and I try my best to advocate for women having time to themselves outside of being a wife, mom, student, friend, etc., I love reminding them of their inner and outer beauty.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Spending unlimited amount of time at home with my family. My safe place before everyone grew up and we all started our separate lives as adults.
