Today we’d like to introduce you to Orion Paxx.
Hi Orion, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As far as being an artist, I work in radio too!! Before I started working in radio, I was working at the local grocery store. Shout out Publix!! Lol, I was in school at the time, and I needed an internship to graduate. So one day at work, I see this guy shopping with a legit 103.5 the beat polo shirt on. (Shout out to Vision!! We become homies after that) So I thought to myself, he has to work at The Beat. Which was my favorite station when I moved out here. So I was like, I gotta talk to him! I waited for him to turn the corner from the frozen food aisle, and I stepped to him. Told him my first name (Which is Andre or Dre) told him I was in school and needed an internship to graduate. He was like, yo we’re always looking for interns. Take this number down, and call tomorrow. So the next day, I called, I think it was a Wednesday, went in Thursday for an interview, and started Friday! I interned for about four weeks, then after that, about 2, or 3 months later, got a call from Vic Mendez who was a programming coordinator for Y100 Miami. He was like, Dre!! When can you start?! I said yesterday!! Lol, so I got hired as a Board Op, running the boards. And all while doing that, I was learning the in’s and out’s of radio. How to run a board, do a live broadcast, etc. And working on my craft. Doing air-checks. I first got on-air on Y100 in 2009, doing Saturday mornings, and I did that for about a year. Then transitioned to filling in on nights during the week, which was prime time. And in 2012, I believe, I started hosting a mix show, called Club 100 with DJ Obscene and DJ Konflikt, on Friday’s and Saturday nights. It was dope!! Was def good vibes. Shouts to those brothas, they’re def two talented individuals. We did the show for a minute!! And in 2013, 103.5 The Beat relaunched, and I was asked to be a part of The Breakfast Club morning show. The affiliate producer, local on-air connection here in Miami. I said Yeah!! Let’s go!! So I officially started with the breakfast club in Jan. 2014, and also an on-air talent. filling in during the week/ weekends, when needed. I have my own show as well. You can catch me Sundays on 103.5 from 3p-7p. Tune in!!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
If there’s no struggles then that’s no fun. There def was!! When the recession hit, I was working two jobs part-time, at Publix and at the radio station, and it was tough. I was broke, lol Living with my older brother, my Pops telling me I should go into the military. It was def a struggle. But I feel that builds character and makes you wanna preserver even more. Makes you stronger.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well, apart from working in radio, being an on-air talent on 103.5 the beat here in Miami. Which I mentioned in my story earlier in the interview. I’m also an artist. I do music… I go by the name Orion Paxx. I’ve been doing music for a while before I started in radio. I have some music out now on Spotify, Apple Music, all the streaming platforms, YouTube as well. Check me out!! I’m working on a few projects now that I’m really excited about!! And some things I’m really proud of would have to be my team. I don’t keep a huge circle, it’s about four of us, but I’m proud of them!! Also, another proud moment would be when I went on tour in Japan for my music. Was a vibe!!! That was a dope experience. And lastly, this was a great proud moment, as well, rocking the main stage with my crew at the Sunfest music fest in 2019. Another vibe!! We rocked it in front of like 5,000 ppl!! I think what sets me apart from others is my work ethic. My Grandad, may He Rest In Peace, always told me, don’t stop. Forward movement, that’s what I’m all about.
What’s next?
As far as plans for the future. Musically, I would love to go on a mini-tour with the release of this new project I’m working on. Also, working with a couple of people on merch to sell as well. Basically building the brand up more. And with radio, just keep grinding, putting in work, I also do voiceover work as well. I’ve been doing some work with a few clients and looking to continue to grow in that as well.
