Life & Work with Dorene Ginzler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorene Ginzler.

Hi Dorene, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Very early on, I loved to create with anything I could get my hands on from sewing, jewelry and ceramics, to photography, drawing and painting, earning my BFA. This was definitely not to my family’s delight, but I was on a relentless pursuit of personal expression to share the joy that art brings to people all over the world.

Fast forward, while living in Michigan, I designed and built a production pottery studio. I developed my own glaze recipes, wholesaled my work to retailers, taught ceramics and sculpture, and did a lot of art fair shows, acquiring hundreds of collectors along the way. The physical labor and cold weather became very challenging to say the least.

A move to South Florida was the plan, to find inspiration from nature and the sea and re-focus on oil and watercolor painting. I swim in the coral reefs searching for the amazing shapes of the fish and sea creatures and get that euphoric feeling. My recent watercolor paintings celebrate what I see in the underwater world and nature, using an occasional pinch of sea salt and explosive, vibrant colors. While listening to music, I paint repetitive patterns that intertwine, many are symbolic of atmospheric landscapes and portals to another dimension. I hope the viewer sees something new each time they look at my work and that it provides a bit of peace and happiness.

I also enjoy working with art collectors and interior designers to create custom paintings with colors mixed to match interior decor for individuals and business environments. Visitors are always welcome to visit me in my painting studio by appointment which is located at: Ginzler Art Studio, 1612 NW 2nd Ave, Suite#10, Boca Raton, FL 33432

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being academically trained as an artist, the reality sank in after university graduation: “How will I ever make a living as an artist and pay back my student loans?” For most young artists, it just doesn’t happen, and it’s something they don’t talk about in art school.

With a broken heart, I traveled a bumpy road for several decades working long hours in a myriad of odd jobs, sold cars, and dabbled in real estate. I would squeeze in time when I could to create works and teach art along the way to remain connected to my passion.

Commitment and goals pay off to make dreams come true. I’ve been fortunate to have several galleries represent my work over the years, but at the moment, I’m struggling to find new ones where my work will have a good fit.

Today I’m thankful to have my own studio space, show my work to art enthusiasts and collectors, and create my best work in the years to come.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make art to freeze time allowing my mind to travel and find a happy place in our chaotic world. I like to push the boundaries of paint mediums, with the mixing of endless different color combinations and their placement on the canvas or paper composition being the actual subject matter, and recognizable imagery being of secondary importance. Influenced by music when I work, I use buttery paints, spontaneous brush strokes and gestural markings which take on a spirituality and beautiful life of their own, showing evidence of the artist’s hand as ever-present. The overlapping lines and shapes create textured road maps, which are often reminiscent of secret or mysterious places and events I’ve seen around the world. The colors and shapes speak for themselves, so the viewer may see what they wish.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite book is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. Deepak Chopra books and podcasts help me with mindfulness, meditation and keep me centered in my thoughts.
