Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Griffith.
Hi Malik, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story starts being home in the Virgin Islands. My family is from the island called St. Thomas, as a child music & culture was always thing that influenced me daily. My father sent me to a music school and learned the bass guitar. I was the only one student in that class so I got a lot of attention. I learned grooves and got deeper in music through that whole experience. Church was another influence, I controlled the soundboard so I was locked into sound design and mixing. Being around instruments and loving people allowed me to flourish. Fast-forwarding to 2013, I started making beats on my computer with MPC Essentials and later Ableton Live. I was heavily interested in Underground hip hop music, jazz, reggae, dancehall, and blues. I really wanted to make everything I would curate in my head so I just got in the gym and did the work. Nowadays, I am constantly making music on my MacBook, Ableton is my baby, it’s like a video game sometimes so I have a lot of fun making music these days. Vinyl has been a love of mine since I was a kid, being able to learn how sample records was an epitome of my craft.
I’m in a record label THATFEEL and it’s been such an experience so far. A lot of diversity that comes out of the camp. We are going to change the culture in music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A smooth road? Not at all. Life has obstacles but when you have a strong support system of people that are genuinely present in your life and being a positive influence, it’s hard to feel like things are a struggle. My latest struggle has been finding a crew, but at last through trial and error the people presented themselves through time. Much love to Anthony Scott, Darius Roberts (Donny Marvo) and Gregory Jr. (Beloveddd). They helped me a lot in this last year creatively and spiritually to get me where I am now. Love.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a beat-maker, abstract painter, and an executive producer. I am known for my production in all genres and media. I’m a crate digger so I love searching for new vinyl to sample and use in my production. My inspiration haunts me so I’m always creating something new. I am most proud of my ability to be a team leader and great friend. My willpower, patience, and creativity sets me apart from others. My persistence for constantly creating allows me to stay ahead of the game sonically and artistically.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
My most important lesson so far has been learning proper discernment for all situations and just being open-minded to all humans and being open to love. Love rules all and I wholeheartedly believe that love will allow us as a whole to flourish and be connected.
