Meet Manning Sumner of Legacy Fit in Wynwood and Edgewater

Today we’d like to introduce you to Manning Sumner.

Manning is known for his incredible ability to transform lives. He played sports throughout his life with focus, determination and drive. But, he also had an ability to motivate himself and teammates when times were the toughest. Now, he is credited with dozens of “comeback” stories in professional sports and changed lives amongst those who subscribe to his “No Days Off” philosophy.

Manning’s dream of going “pro” in football was quickly diverted from playing to coaching in college when he broke his back as a linebacker at Auburn University. It was then he decided to take what he learned in his own life to transform others, and his journey began at Samford University as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach to professional and collegiate athletes. He brought this knowledge and experience to Miami in 2001. While growing his training and coaching career, Manning was a fitness model and acted as a body double in movies including Bad Boys II. He rose to become one of the most sought-after trainers in the area and was selected to work and travel with chart-topping music artists, entertainers, models and professional athletes.

In 2008, he created Legacy Fit – branding his fitness philosophies, attitude and approach in a professional training facility in the heart of the Miami Arts District. He created a unique environment for professional athletes and gym-goers alike. In addition to renowned professional training, Legacy Fit quickly became the top boot camp gym in Miami (Men’s Health Magazine, Miami New Times, 2014, 2015, 2016; Timeout NYC/Miami, 2016; Ocean Drive 2013, 2016; StayFit305.com, 2016; Yelp 2016).

Manning put his life philosophy on paper in 2012 and wrote the lifestyle book, “No Days OFF” (NDO). Through a combination of healthy eating, self-care and physical activity, the book showed readers how to become the best version of themselves every day. The concept gained popularity and resulted in the “NDO Movement” that spurred the expansion of Legacy Fit into a virtual coaching business and brick and mortar franchise. Legacy Fit currently has three locations in the U.S. and will open a location in Asia in spring 2017.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I opened in November 2008 right after the recession. Although my location was centrally located, it was at the end of a dead end street, private but hidden from any drive by or walk by traffic. The street had not been developed yet and I was literally the only business operating on this street. The building flooded a lot the first two years and people were not crazy about the look of the area.

The first 3 years I had to adjust my business model and keep reinventing myself until I found the right system that could be duplicated and the right staff to work with me.

Please tell us about Legacy Fit.
Legacy Fit is the creator & leader in “P.I.T.” Partner Interval Training. We also specialize in Private Strength & Conditioning and we started the NO DAYS OFF movement.

I am personally known for training professional athletes. I have worked with thousands of players over my 17 year career. Guys like Julius Peppers Carolina Panthers, Matt Kemp Atlanta Braves, Shaun Livingston Golden State Warriors, Rudy Gay Sacramento Kings, Jordan Reed Washington Redskins, and Ricky Jean Francois Green Bay Packers.

I am most proud of our company’s ability to change lives. We are not just a gym, it’s not just a workout. When you come to Legacy Fit you have an experience and are encouraged to be consistent, be intense and take NO DAYS OFF on your life in all aspects.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I believe everything happens for a reason and I have grown so much by having to find a way to make it work. I wouldn’t change a thing.
