Today we’d like to introduce you to Josniel Fiallo.
Hi Josniel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Cuba in the 70’s, came to Miami in 1995 to find myself in a country where I didn’t have any relatives or friends. Luckily I found a job in this wonderful fashion and upholstery fabric shop located in the middle of Miami.
My first job title was “fabrics salesman”. As a young entrepreneur in that position, I was always fascinated by the attitude and leadership of the store’s owner, which encouraged me to become a leader for my coworkers, helping them acquire more leads and completing sales.
After a few short years, I became the store manager for Rex Fabrics and made a great bonding relationship with the owners. A relation that is still growing every year since now, to this day, I consider them part of my family too.
20 years passed, and I kept working as the GM for Rex Fabrics, one of the things that had changed since I started working for this wonderful company is that that the previous owner was looking to retire, so I was given the opportunity to become the owner by purchasing it from him, which came to fruition at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After struggling with the pandemic and with the store being closed for almost two months during 2020, we were able to bring sales numbers up, and now we are watching better sales analytics than ever, this was only achievable due to the help of my family and our staff.
In the present, Rex Fabrics continues to bring top designer and exclusive textiles to our customers all over the world, now more than ever, as we revamped our E-commerce platform and now we can reach audiences that weren’t able to visit our store in Miami Florida. In our world-renowned showroom, you’ll find a complete collection of fabrics of every type, pattern, and quality imaginable, same as haute couture, bespoke tailoring, and upholstery services.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any entrepreneur will tell you that setting up a business isn’t always easy. When you’re stuck in the intricacies of acquiring a company loan, preparing a business plan, or finding a place, it can be helpful to hear some business success stories. Even the most successful enterprises, whether small, medium, or large, have faced difficulties. It can also be really beneficial to remind yourself of certain things.
Like many others, my path hasn’t been an easy one. There is no such thing as a success story without struggles along the way. This has been the result of very hard work and commitment to make the company grow.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself quite good at self-discipline and self-management. Sales environments have always been high-stress zones, and I believe with the right coworkers it becomes all too easy to give up trying as hard as one can to be the best one can be in this position. After a long, it’s easy to lose track of how organized you are or how excellent of a manager you are. I try to stay out of this mindset by prioritizing my tasks and managing my staff.
I make swift decisions. That is, in my opinion, an irreplaceable skill in this industry. I’ve had to make quick and difficult decisions. Most of them proved to be sound decisions, and for those that weren’t, I actively collaborated with my team to resolve the problem and learn from it, sometimes I can be wrong, that’s when my staff comes up and helps, I trust my staff 100%.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Let’s see…something most people around don’t know about me. Even though it’s not the way I am with other people, I actually enjoy being alone. While I am addicted to spending time with my family and friends, I also require a large amount of personal space. I prefer to be alone until I’m satisfied, after which I return to the world.
Introverts (like me, who is in between introvert and extrovert) need a lot of space to think, feel, breathe, and be; and when I go to too many events or parties, my brain fractures and fizzles, and I have to go concentrate in what I’m doing for work.
