Today we’d like to introduce you to Rochelle Knight.
Hi Rochelle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m another curious millennial who wants to see the world, but decided to begin with exploring my own country. Growing up, exploring Jamaica was always perceived as being expensive or something which was just for “the tourists” and out of reach for the average Jamaican. As I grew older, I started to realize that this wasn’t true!
Travelling around Jamaica can be as cheap or as expensive as you want to make it, and there’s something for every budget! I started a blog called Adventures from Elle in December 2016 to share that epiphany, and the rest is history. I take pride in sharing the best of Jamaica with the world and in inspiring other Jamaicans and foreigners alike to explore Jamaica’s hidden gems.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My blog is primarily a hobby at this time so the journey has been mostly smooth. The biggest hiccup I’ve experienced was earlier this year when my blog went offline for two weeks because of a mistake I made in attempting to switch webhosts. I cringed every time someone messaged to ask what was happening with my website, but in the same breath, I was also flattered that so many people noticed. There’s the occasional rude message or comment too, but I hardly pay any attention to those. Blogging for me has mostly been a rewarding hobby.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I share unbiased reviews of where to go, where to stay and what to do in Jamaica. I’m known for shedding light on most of Jamaica’s hidden gems. If you Google a Jamaican river, waterfall or attraction which is considered to be an off-the-beaten-path gem, chances are you’ll encounter an article from Adventures from Elle giving directions, costs, what to expect and lots of other pertinent travel tips and secrets about that location. I’m proud that doing what I love in my spare time (that is, travelling, writing and content creation) has turned me into an unofficial Jamaican ambassador of sorts. Hence, people are often surprised to learn that my main career is in medicine.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
This crisis has reinforced the importance of nature in our lives. Nature is the best place to destress and forget about what’s happening in the world for a few hours. I find myself appreciating the simple pleasure of being outside more than ever before, especially in places which are off-the-grid and have no crowds.
