Meet Melissa Colon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Colon.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a young girl, I always aspired to have my own business where I was able to use my creativity. As I got older and started working, I realized more and more that I wanted to pursue my dream of owning my own business. I started going to college for business and got my bachelor’s degree in business management. Shortly after graduating during the pandemic and tired of being stuck at home, I told my boyfriend one day, let’s pack a blanket, go to the store, get some snacks and drinks, and let’s head to the park and have a picnic. And while we were both enjoying a nice day at the park, all while social distancing, it hit me this is something that most couples and friends would love to be doing right now, just enjoying the outdoors and having a picnic instead of being stuck at home!

And I knew this was a business idea that I wanted to take to the next level; I wanted to create luxury picnics for couples and friends and create a memorable experience for any type of occasion. This was the perfect way to use my creativity and bring joy and memorable experiences during difficult times such as the pandemic to so many people. The next day I was at the store making purchases for my luxury picnic business and started taking pictures and promoting on Instagram because valentines was just around the corner, and what better time than valentines to make my debut. I was able to get clients for valentines, and after seeing their reactions when they saw the setup and how much they appreciated every detail and how much they enjoyed their time, I knew this was something I wanted to continue to pursue. Ever since valentines business hasn’t stopped and I couldn’t be more thankful. I want to continue to pursue my studies in business and learn more on how I can make my business better and bring more creativity and joy to my clients!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road I knew that I would have to make a sacrifice financially at the beginning of this business to get to where I am now. I believed so much in this business that with the money I had in my savings and with my parent’s support it was possible to create this business. The first few picnics were trial and error, I realized that a lot of the decor I invested in weren’t necessarily working out and weren’t very practical for the business, so I had to rethink and revamp and invest some more in new equipment but it was all worth it. Time management was definitely a struggle at the beginning. Learning how to manage a full-time job and this business was tough, but I knew this was a sacrifice I was willing to take to make my business work and continue to bring happiness to my clients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a 23-year-old business graduate student with a bachelor’s in business management who wants to continue furthering her studies. I am known for my ability to multi-task and work well under pressure. I enjoy leading my team at work and leading my team in my business. I am most proud of where I am today that I’m still young and pursuing my dreams daily and I only want to improve more each day. I am a go-getter and someone who doesn’t like to waste any time and take on any opportunity that comes my way. Creating The Glamour Picnics was the perfect way of using my creativity and putting my managerial skills to work and work in what I love doing.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I’d like to give credit and thanks to my family who have helped pave the way for me into creating this business and lend a hand whether it be helping me with picnic preparations, setups, or marketing ideas, The glamour picnics wouldn’t be where it is today without their help and continuous support.
