Today we’d like to introduce you to Hugo Mijares.
Hi Hugo, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
American Architect and Designer that has moved between automotive, architectural, furniture and product design. Through it all, there’s one attribute that’s remained consistent –my love for speed. Designing and Building High-End Homes and Motorcycles is my passion and my way of life.
Since I was a child, I was interested in Architecture in Design. I believe that I got attracted to design the day that I realized how it influences people, which was around the age of ten. One day on my way home from school, I saw a ford mustang parked in the road, just like the one driven by Steve Mcqueen in the film ‘bullit.’ Whilst looking at it, all sorts of feelings came upon me; curiosity, attraction, allurement, excitement, the tactile and visual feeling. I was febrile, almost as if I stood eye to eye with a resting wildcat. I was afraid to awake it by touching the chassis. It was hard to take my eyes off the car. on my way home, after a certain time, I started to observe the other cars around me, and I realized that they did not provoke the same feelings. The process of dreaming/sketching/drawing/develop and building that dream is still something that excites me and makes me happy.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I realized life is a winding road, but everything happens for a reason. Must of the struggles come for the idea of moving forward and stepped up. I study Architecture in Caracas, Venezuela and moved back to the US to find out that In order to succeed, I needed to study again, which I did (not many people studied a full career twice) that along tells you about my drive, character and love for Architecture. Then I opened my own studio in 2008 (in the middle of the Economic Crash), but international clients kept me afloat. Looking back, going to that kind of struggle was the path to the success I achieved nowadays.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One D+B Miami is a Multidisciplinary Design Company developing a wide range of projects from small exhibits thru High-End Homes, Buildings and Hospitality projects. Everything we do is shaped by our love for thinking (designing) and making (building). It is essential to our architecture that materials, details, and construction are an integral and informative part of the design process. Materials are what realise the architecture and interior design.
We identify with Tropical modern, timeless values, and in our Architecture, we bring the outside in and link purpose with beauty. We do so with an architectural design response that is simple and intuitive yet strong and elegant and sustainable. By subtracting, we find the solution that adds value through simplicity.
We can improve the environment by designing buildings that are built with clarity and simplicity at their core through design excellence, innovation, and public service. We basically bring award-winning perspective and depth to help our clients achieve the world-class design. All the work of our studio is based on the principles of intelligence and beauty.
What were you like growing up?
As a little child, I was always divided between the admiration for my talented mother, who was a piano player and dabbed in art and fashion, and my incredible attraction to any object in movement and to cars and motorcycles in particular. on the one side the art, the fashion, the fantasy, the sensuality of delicate textiles, the refined proportions, the black and white photography… and on the other side the technology, the speed, the unconventionality, the performance, the competition. I think that over time, I have kept the best of the two worlds. Since a very early age, I have scrutinized beautiful objects of all kinds. It has become something instinctive, natural, and very intuitive. Then life takes its course. You have to meet the right people at the right time, I have often had this chance, and it is those encounters that have led me to manifest my talent in different sectors and allowed me to progress.
