Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasia Johnson.
Kasia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I moved to Miami in 2019, I didn’t know anyone. I have a master’s degree in psychology back in Poland and before getting certified to be a counselor in Florida, I decided to follow my biggest dream and passion- fashion styling. I knew I had to put my foot in the industry’s door. Without any shame, as a 27-year-old, I started an internship at Select Model- a model agency in South Beach. I juggled a retail job and the internship waiting for my 5 min to come. I didn’t have to wait too long and one day, an agent asked me if I want to style a test shoot the next day. I had only an evening to put three looks together but I knew I couldn’t say no to such an opportunity.
Fast forward, being a very resourceful and determined person, I kept building my portfolio while working in luxury retail. I was able to meet and work with fantastic people from the industry. Since March 2021, I have started working as a freelancer. I style model’s test shoots, campaigns for brands, e-commerce shoots, editorials and I’ve just started photoshoot production.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I didn’t know anyone and as everybody knows the fashion industry is very hermetic. With my hard work and great work ethic, I built up my reputation and earned my client’s trust. There’s this moment when you build a career in creative field, which is the most challenging, It’s the moment when you need to have a job to pay bills while you keep working on your portfolio. Fashion styling is a lot of labor which nobody talks about- it’s carrying heavy bags with clothes, a lot of standing and lifting. Working in retail requires being on your feet all day and then pulling, returning or being on set on my days off. I was constantly physically exhausted. My passion is the thing that kept me moving forward. Perseverance is the key. People who make it are the ones who don’t quit regardless of the circumstances. And eventually, the time when you can quit your “9 to 5” job comes and you can do what you love exclusively and be paid for it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a fashion stylist and wardrobe consultant. I style campaigns for brands and help my clients to get the images that stand out. I am also a creative director. I come up with ideas for fashion editorials and photoshoots, ads and videos. I’m known for my creativity and style. Coming from Europe, I value minimalistic aesthetics and I believe less is more. I also advocate a more sustainable approach to fashion and I help my clients to build capsule wardrobes. I love personal styling and wardrobe detox in particular, It’s amazing to see my clients’ energy shift after clearing up their closets from outdated, unflattering pieces and general clutter. I promote integrity in my personal style and approach to fashion.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the diversity of nationalities and backgrounds here. I’ve always loved to learn about new cultures and food. I like to gain some knowledge about countries and cultures from people who actually come from there. Not from the news! Also, I’m from Poland and I’ve always dreamed of having a convertible car. Polish weather is not too inviting to have one. Now, living in Miami, I enjoy riding convertible with loud music on and wind in my hair. My biggest mood booster! What I like the least? As a city located so close to the ocean, there’s not enough policy to decrease single-use plastic usage.
