Rising Stars: Meet Kazmira Hamilton of Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kazmira Hamilton.

Hi Kazmira, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I discovered my love for modeling around the same age where your mom starts letting you pick out your own clothes to wear. I loved trying on outfits and having my family hype me up, but what always stuck with me was when I would visit my grandmama and she would take pictures of me on this big ole DSLR camera. She carried that heavy thing around her neck wherever we went. Those moments of her trying to encapsulate our small time together through photos she would have forever, always stuck with me. It inspired me to be interested in taking a photo, not just posing for one. As I made my way through different Performing Arts schools, I learned more about storytelling and the amount of passion I have for the Arts. I got my hands on Nikon Coolpix in my junior year of high school and that’s when I really started to push for modeling. I saved up my money and reached out to professional photographers to take the type of pictures that would get me noticed. During this process, I simultaneously fell more in love with the idea of the types of photos and stories I would want to capture and later completed a degree in Multimedia at FAU. In the last couple months of my senior year of college I got noticed by a modeling agency based in NYC and have been working with them ever since. I mainly work in Brooklyn now, but my dream is to have my modeling take my art and I all around the world!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At some points yes, but mainly no, it hasn’t been smooth. I didn’t know where to start with modeling so it took a lot of research and money to establish myself in the Miami scene. I was already working and going to school, initially for graphic design, so balancing everything became a little overwhelming at certain times. I was denied by many agencies but I would just try to learn from each one, asking the agents directly for critics and who to work with. It takes a lot to be a model ya know. We have to maintain a certain diet, exercise, be your authentic self but at the same time be appealing to the public, and these are just surface-level obstacles. It’s also been difficult getting people to recognize my own photography because they mainly see me as just a model. I went to school to harness my skills in being a Creative Director and have so much more to give to the process than only being in front of the lens.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The official titles I work with are being a Creative Director and Model! I mainly do photography but have background knowledge in film and graphic design. I would describe my photography as narrative and cinematic. I like to give my work the illusion of fantasy and play around with colors as well. I’m known for deep contrast and capturing thought-provoking images. I’m definitely proud of how far I’ve come in finding the meaning behind my art. I was searching for what inspired me for so long, to realize my passion was giving the Black and LQBTQ community a glimpse of themselves in my art; allowing us to explore the fantasies and depths of our emotions. What sets me apart from people is my curiosity about the world. I have this trust in myself that keeps me driven and ready to go wherever life takes me. I’m not ready to be comfortable in my life yet. My modeling also sets me apart because it gives me a dual perspective over any project and offers me the chance of attention and connections to the amazing world of fashion and pop culture.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My success is based purely on my resolve that I can do anything. I try my best to learn from my experiences and don’t believe in failing. I know it’s cliche to say this, but I honestly think you can’t fail, only learn how not to do something. Sometimes I get anxious about whether I’m on the right path or if I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m sure plenty of artists can relate. But essentially I feel like this journey of where I want to go is a good one, and only I can really control that.
