Majie, it’s been too long since we last connected. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts with our community again. Some readers might have missed our prior conversations, so maybe you can kick things off for us with a quick intro?
My father was a well-known French Post-Impressionist painter, so painting has always been part of my life. I turned to Abstract painting twenty years ago and moved to Canada. I have been awarded five awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists. My work appeared in more than 20 group and solo shows in Canada, France and US. To me, the slow, tumultuous and magical process of giving birth to a painting, this embrace with life and its mysteries always connects me to Henry Miller’s words….“To paint is to love again”.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a new series titled “Love Always Falls back On Its Feet”. It combines an abstract approach with a positive message. The series is all about love. In each painting, I have deconstructed the word love (L-O-V-E) to illustrate the challenges and chaos that can arise. Yet, as the “E” of love lands at the bottom right of each painting, with constancy and stability, it acts as a reminder that love is always present and it nurtures my trust that ‘love will prevail’. Stylistically, I am interested in how geometric and organic shapes exist on a continuum and how they complement or oppose one another. This dialogue between unplanned gestural raw movement and a decisive line or geometric shape is to me a fascinating dance.
What are you trying to convey through your art?
My “Love Always Falls Back On Its Feet” series is a positive and hopeful response to the helplessness I sometimes feel when I fully open to the challenging times we are traversing. Through it, my wish to foster hope and to connects us to the presence of love. In each painting, although the word L-O-V-E is sometimes hidden, broken apart or hard to find, it is ultimately always here just like the sun always shines even though it may be hidden by the clouds.
Can you shed some light on the main influences that have impacts your work?
My greatest influence was my father, who was a well-known French Post Impressionist. Louis Nallard, my godfather, who was a pioneer of the lyrical abstract movement in Paris, opened me up to Abstract painting. Finally, I admire the work of the German artist Gerhard Richter.
Tell us about your journey as an artist. – what else should we know about your story?
I love art that pushes against the rigid separation between the artist and the viewer, I believe that there is an artist in all of us and that creating is simply part of life, of everybody’s life, so I have developed an Interactive Art Series titled “Re-Create”. The viewer is invited to trespass beyond looking to touching and ultimately stepping into the role of artist/creator. With a multiplicity of combinations possible, the “viewer” can move a variety of shapes on a magnetized background resulting in their own unique design. It is thrilling to me to inspire the “viewer” to create and to transform the art itself. My series “Re-Create” taps into the playfulness and creativity of the viewer. What is most important for you as an artist?
For me the most important is to stay true to myself and to continuously push my own boundaries, to stay away from recipes and to embrace the mystery and the unknown.
