Life & Work with Black Fairy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Black Fairy.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, my story started the day I decided I wanted better for myself. Growing up in Tampa Florida, was hard as teen trying to navigate my way through my newfound sexuality. I struggled a lot but once I made the decision to do better for me, that’s where life kinda began. I moved to Minneapolis, MN to attend college and from there explored many city’s across the country. To be here today, I had to first fall in love and accept me for who I am and that led to me finally being able to explore who I really was as a person and then came my love for music. It was always there but for the first time in December of 2019, I decide to take my talents and do something with it. Now I’m chatting with you! So there’s my story in a nutshell, lol.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In my personal life, it hasn’t been the smoothest, from being homeless for a period of time at a young age to loosing everything and starting completely over. As far as music, there is a constant struggle of being put on the same playing field as a male or female rapper. I feel like the same way women had to fight their way and really rap their way to the respect they are at now is the current fight of many lgbtq+ rappers. The thing I’ve learned though, is Life always presents challenges and struggles it’s how well we handle them and how hard we push ourselves to keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a rapper specializing in unique bars, flow, delivery and vibes. My fan base really consist of people who followed me on Instagram for my creative and sometime intriguing Instagram content. That content grew my following and once I began doing music, that same creativity translated into amazing visuals. My most proudest moment was the day I went viral on Twitter without even having a profile on the platform. The viral moment happened when I released my song “Vogue” with a visual that showcased and shed light on the ballroom scene. It really showed me that I had something special and encouraged me to keep going. What I think sets me apart from a lot of people is my ability to fully create and execute my visions beyond surface level. My flow is mine and my sound is mine. I can’t be duplicated. Anybody can do what I do but there is no one who can do it like me to the level of detail and consistency. I continuously release projects of quality. Where as most people push singles, I enjoy pushing entire albums. And I do all of this completely on my own. I have a great team that brings my vision to life but I do this all with an iPhone.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One thing life has taught me is to keep living. Everything I have done in my life, whether good or bad, has brought me to where I am today. A few times, I thought about giving up but then the next phase of life just got better once I tried. Learning to accept the cards I was dealt and the decisions I made was the lesson I had to learn in order to become Black Fairy.
