Today we’d like to introduce you to Luanda Hart-Rodriguez.
Hi Luanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I used to visit the gun range with my husband on occasion, never to shoot with intention. It wasn’t until we were in a situation that changed my thinking. We were picking up a prescription late at night and a man jumped in the back seat of my car, my husband gestured for me to grab the firearm but I froze. Once I snapped out of fear, my husband already had the dude out the car and was fully engage with pistol in hand. The guy was high off drugs and thankfully, the site of the gun woke him up a little. My husband was quick and observant. I knew I had to start training after that, I knew the importance of being situational aware and being ready to protect yourself at all cost. I always thought, what if I was alone or what if my child was in the back seat and this guy had a psychotic episode.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. I’m a black female pistol instructor. When I started, I don’t think I was being taken seriously. No matter how much I put myself out there, I rarely had a full class or a booked class at all. I knew the energy was there and I knew it was a matter of time before people realized this is not a game. Well, the pandemic, along with the current temperature of this country, changed everything and I’ve been evolving since.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a certified pistol instructor, I currently specialize in safety, concealed carry and beginner/intermediate intro to pistol classes, I host ladies night at the range with my partner Danielle every 3rd Friday of the month, I am also a content creator to stimulate interest and awareness. Let me mention that I am launching a spin-off brand around my purpose.
How do you think about happiness?
Besides my family, watching someone overcome their fears and follow-through makes me happy, educating my community makes me happy because education is the cure for ignorance.
