Today we’d like to introduce you to De’Laija Napier.
De’Laija, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for communications and marketing is rooted in my love for helping people connect. Even as a kid, I was always the person who got my friends to see things from a new perspective and connect in new ways. In high school, I started volunteering to help with the social media for a local pageant and from then, I knew I wanted to go into marketing and public relations. I ended up going to college and getting a degree bachelor’s degree in PR and Advertising, then a master’s degree in Media Studies. One of my professors was the VP of Marketing at Hasbro and the passion he had for his work was so inspiring! The way he got excited to tell us stories about different scenarios and campaigns he had worked on was what really pushed me to pursue a career in this field.
After college, I landed a full-time job but it wasn’t in media or communications or anything I majored in. After lots of bouncing around, I ended up working as a seasonal media assistant with the Orange Bowl Committee and the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl. That experience reminded me of what I love so much about marketing, social media, public relations, the whole nine yards. It was one of the toughest experiences I have had but I learned so much that I wouldn’t trade that time for anything else. I started freelancing and taking contract work in between to keep up with industry trends and stay up to date with all the different skills I would need as an industry professional. I had been getting interviews and lots of job offers but something kept telling me I was not made to work for someone else. I felt like I needed to branch out on my own and make my own unique set of opportunities, despite the judgment of not holding a full-time for an extended period of time or constantly switching jobs. With this, I finally took a leap of faith and got all the paperwork together to start my company, Sunflower Media LLC.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been the easiest journey but I can say I have definitely surprised myself! At the start, I didn’t know anything about setting prices, offering services, or structuring my businesses. Thankfully, I have a lot of great business owners that I look up to that were willing to give me proper guidance and support throughout the entire process. Plus, I was amazed at how willing people were to trust me and my skills, despite my business being so new. I didn’t realize how many people were saying good things about me and my work.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I was born in Hollywood, FL and I love the fact that the beach is 10 minutes from my house. I love my neighborhood and the community I live in as well. I love that I am able to support local small businesses and uplift my fellow community members. When it comes to Fort Lauderdale, I love the nightlife and entertainment the most. There is always something new to do and I always ending finding someplace I’ve never been before with friends. Needless to say, since it happens in most of South Florida, so many places flood easily so that sucks sometimes.
