Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Appleton Kinsey, LDO, MHSc.
Top Notch Eyewear started in 2013 from humble beginnings. Latoya Graduated in 2011 with an Associate in Science for Vision Care Technology, Latoya always knew that getting a degree meant for her to create a job. Top Notch Eyewear emerged with a dream and a few designer sunglasses from her personal collection like consignment. Helping people see and look good was always the vision. Her love for the fashion of glasses made a big impact on how she handled her business. She always felt an optician with a business is a business with a vision. Six months into running her business while working as an optical technician for an optical; she was told that she could potentially lose her job because it was a conflict of interest. This was because her job consisted of selling eyewear. She did not give up on her dream of entrepreneurship, so she added phone cases to her business. This allowed her to attend pop-up shops locally.
While working that job, she was in school and running her business. Everything was great. Then she had her son in 2014 and she had postpartum depression. She put her business dreams on the hold to work and focus on school while being a new mom with two children and a wife. She’s such a great optician, who went on to receive a Bachelor’s in Health Science in Maternal-child (2015), Masters in Health Science with a concentration in higher education (2018), and expected to graduate in 2021 with a Doctorate in Global Health. LaToya advocates for healthy eyes and health literacy. She overjoyed about educating people so they can make the best decisions for their continued well-being. She’s even a published author. Her book 5 Easy Steps to Meal Planning is available on Amazon. Latoya gives back to her community by offering free breastfeeding support, she’s also a breast feeding coach. Thankfully with the grace of God, her dreams never died. She has been able to be a full-time employee for herself since March 2019. Ironically 2020 was named the year of the optician. Which is the year of the rebirth of Top Notch Eyewear.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The rode has not been smooth. I have allowed situations to get me off track. I found that even when I wanted to give up. I found joy in working in my area of expertise as an optician and master health scientist.

The owner of Top Notch Eyewear is most proud of is being awarded in July 2020 and October 2020 for her hard work as a boss lady.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck never played a role because it was all apart of God’s plan for this business to be successful. My business stands firm on Psalms 119:18 “ “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” There is no success without strife. The trials are expected. Hard work, dedication, and prayer are the keys to my success.
