Meet Yesenia Tefel of Tefel Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia Tefel.

Yesenia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was young, I wanted to be an architect but once I started college, I realized that there was way too much math involved. I decided to switch to graphic design because it was a field that I could more closely relate to. Art and painting have always been a part of my life and the opportunity to turn that into a career was exciting. I pursued graphic design and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Miami (Go Canes!). Those were some of the most enjoyable years of my life. I spent the majority of my time painting, silkscreening and learning the basics of design.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all, but with every challenge I learn how to make things better for myself and my business. It takes time to build up a regular flow of work when you are first starting out, as there will always be low and high seasons throughout the year. As you gain more clients, it definitely gets easier and those clients will recommend you for new business. The most important thing as a freelancer is to remember that I am my own brand. This is one of the more difficult aspects of having a small business in a field such as design because it is a direct representation of my product.

Please tell us about Tefel Designs.
Tefel Designs is a creative agency that offers branding and content creation services. I create logos, branding, packaging design, websites and marketing materials for businesses committed to investing in their long-term success. I like to get to know my clients and learn as much as possible about their businesses in order to create designs that represent their message and values. I understand the importance of creating a logo or website that serves as the visuals for your organization and how that can influence your consumers. Aside from design, I also have an Etsy Shop, YesiMakesArt, where I sell acrylic paintings, hand-painted coasters and stickers.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My Saturday morning art classes. For about ten years, I went to an art studio to learn everything from how to use charcoal to how to paint with oils. It was a fun and exciting place for me; where I could paint with my sister and my friends. I remember always leaving full of charcoal or paint on my hands and face. It made me feel like a real artist. All of the techniques and use of different mediums I learned was taught to me at this art studio. It set the foundation for me to develop my skills further and pursue a career related to art.
