Today we’d like to introduce you to Daphne Dauphin.
Daphne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started for me around the year of 2018. That’s when colorful wigs/hair seemingly exploded all over the world. I literally couldn’t open my Instagram without seeing rainbow tresses all down the explore page lmao. I remember always thinking to myself, “man, I wish I could do that too!” So one day, I decided to do just that and went for it! YouTube and Instagram tutorials became my whole life. I educated myself for many months before I actually started working on my craft in 2019. I’m so thankful for the family and friends that I have in my life.
All 2019, they allowed me to practice, mess up, gain experience, and even perfect a couple of things using their hair. I officially launched my business in January of 2020 and I haven’t looked back since! I’ve always been described as a creative, “colorful” person, but I could never quite find the place to channel that energy. I went through a drawing phase, trust me when I say that did not work out lmao. This journey of becoming a self-taught hair colorist has given me the place to channel all the creativity I have within me, and I am forever grateful for every minute I spend doing so.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. I officially launched my business this year, then boom, Covid hit. It was extremely difficult for me to manage transitioning to online school, being unemployed, and trying to run a business all at the same time. It was definitely a trying time in the beginning; however I refused to give up.
Please tell us about The Color Factor.
I specialize in coloring wigs/bundles. As a company, I think the thing I’m most proud of is the customer service provided to every potential client. It’s extremely important to me that I treat every potential client with kindness, respect, and professionalism. I think the one thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I try to be as personable as possible. For each first time client that I get, I make sure that they receive a little handwritten thank you note, along with their favorite candy. It’s important to me that I show each client a little token of my appreciation because I really do appreciate them!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I absolutely had to start over, the only thing I would do differently is starting my coloring journey earlier. If I started earlier, I believe I would’ve been much better, much farther, and more knowledgeable in my craft. In the same breath, however, I gotta say that I recognize that no two paths are the same. I think I put a little bit of pressure on myself because I know most women in the hair industry knew they wanted to be apart of it since they were young; I didn’t figure it out till a few years ago lol. It took me a little longer than most, but I’m not mad at it! I’m confident that as long as I keep running my race, everything is going to fall into place exactly when they’re supposed to.
